Congratulations and thank you to Lieutenant Bartholomew on his 27 years of service!

Today marks Lieutenant Russ Bartholomew’s last shift after 27 years of dedicated service to the fire department. Throughout his career, Russ has exemplified professionalism, commitment, and leadership while making a lasting impact on the department and community he served. Thank you, Russ, for your years of service, sacrifice, and dedication. Come celebrate with Russ at his walk-out on Thursday, May 28th at 3PM, Fire Station 1.

Happy Memorial Day from Local 3892. Today we pay tribute to the courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have given their lives for our freedom, reminding us that their sacrifices pave the way for a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow.

Libertyville's Memorial Day Ceremony takes place TODAY. Participants will gather at the Metra Train Station at 9:00 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. procession to Cook Park. The program will continue in Cook Park with music from the Libertyville High School Band, presentations by Mayor Johnson, representatives of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and high school essay contest winners. Non-emergency Village offices and Village Hall will be closed on Memorial Day.

Happy International Firefighters Day! International Firefighters Day was created in 1999 after five Firefighters died tragically during a wildfire in Australia. It is celebrated on May 4th, which is also Saint Florian’s Day. Saint Florian, who is said to be the first commanding Firefighter of a Roman Battalion, is the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

Today is Worker’s Memorial Day in the United States and National Day of Mourning in Canada, which commemorates union workers who have died in the line of duty. Worker’s Memorial Day is an opportunity to highlight the preventable nature of most workplace incidents and illnesses, and to promote campaigns and union organizations in the fight for improvements in workplace safety.

Nearly 55 years ago on April 28th, which is now Worker’s Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job—our fundamental right.
