🐾 Pet Food Safety Matters! 🐾

Keeping our pets healthy goes beyond choosing quality food-- it also means practicing safe food handling habits every day.

✅️ Always check pet food recall notices and never feed food that has been recalled or may be contaminated
✅️ Wash pet food and water bowls regularly with hot, soapy water to prevent the buildup of bacteria
✅️ Clean food scoops, storage containers, and feeding mats frequently. These items can harbor germs just like food bowls.
✅️ Follow the storage instructions on pet food labels. Proper storage helps maintain freshness and reduces the risk of contamination.
✅️ Discard old or spoiled food and always wash your hands before and after handling pet food.

A few simple steps can help protect your furry family members from foodborne illness and keep mealtime safe and healthy!

Hot weather = hot pavement

Before heading out for a walk with your dog, remember this important safety tip -- Place the back of your hand on the sidewalk for 5 to 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!

Hot pavement can cause painful burns and injuries in just minutes. During warm weather try to:
-- Walk during cooler morning or evening hours
-- Stick to grass or shaded paths when possible
-- Bring water for both you and your pup
-- Watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting or slowing down

Your dog relies on you to keep them safe and comfortable this summer.

Last week, Animal Control Officer Bryant responded to a call for service regarding a baby raccoon that had been wandering through yards all morning, crying. Upon her arrival, she located this sweet little baby and was able to safely capture him. He was transported to Lakeside Nature Center to receive care as he was without mom and in desperate need of hydration.

This is a perfect example of when intervention from Animal Control is warranted. Because Animal Control was contacted, we were able to get this baby the help he needed.

If there is sick or injured wildlife in your area, contact your local Animal Control Department.
