In observance of Labor Day, the Pickens County Coroner’s Office will be closed on Monday September 7, 2026. Normal business operations will resume on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Today, August 31, we recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. 💜

Today we remember the lives lost to overdose, honor the families and loved ones left behind, and stand with those who are still struggling.

Behind every statistic is a person.
Behind every loss is a family.
Every life matters. Every story matters.

Overdose does not discriminate, and neither should our compassion. Together, through awareness, education, support, and connection, we can help prevent overdose and save lives.

If you or someone you love is struggling, please know that you are not alone. There is hope, and help is available.

Due to expected high temperatures, Pickens County Emergency Management will open a cooling shelter beginning Wed., Aug. 12, at 1 p.m. It will be located Fire Station 15-1 (756 Concord Church Rd, Pickens). Water and light snacks will be available, but no meals will be provided.

Stay safe, cool and hydrated.

PCSO is proud to release a new program geared toward providing an extra layer of protection for our elderly and/or medically fragile citizens who live alone. Silver Shield is a program that will use our communications specialists to make routine phone calls to these citizens to check their well-being. In the event that these calls are not answered in a timely manner, a deputy will respond to check on them.

If you have a loved one that you believe would qualify for this program, please contact our Communications Coordinator, Nathan Galloway, at (864) 898-5567 to discuss eligibility requirements and complete enrollment. We look forward to serving our citizens in this capacity and giving their loved ones, who may live several miles away, a little more comfort in knowing they are ok.

As a reminder when celebrating with family and friends this holiday weekend please make sure to make safety a priority.
Here are just a few safety tips from us here at the Coroners office.

-Buckle up and stay alert
-Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
-Impaired driving can ruin lives. Plan ahead and designate a sober driver or rideshare service.
-Fireworks can be fun but also dangerous, leave them to the professionals.
-Remember alcohol or drugs and fireworks don’t mix.
-Whether at the pool or lake always supervise children.
-Never swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During this holiday weekend when celebrating with your family, please make sure safety is your first priority. Be aware of the dangers of firework-related injuries and take proper precautions. The best way to prevent injuries related to fireworks is to leave the displays to trained professionals.

However, if you do light up fireworks at home, the CPSC offers tips on how to stay safe:

* Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
* Make sure fireworks are legal in your area and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use and follow directions carefully.
* Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
* Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
* Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
* Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Light fireworks one at a time, and move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
* Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
* After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse or soak the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
