On September 8 and September 9 we had the opportunity to complete Fire Prevention with Meadowlark Elementary School. We want to thank them for allowing us to speak with the Kindergarten and 1st Grade classes!

What made you want to become a firefighter?
Actually, I never thought that I would do anything other than my career in carpet cleaning and water damage restoration. However, life happened. I lost my partner of 41 years (my dad), and it became clear that I needed a different scene and "different partners". I've always loved helping people in the cleaning industry, and now I get the opportunity to help them in a different capacity.

What is the best part of being on the Liberal Fire Department?
I absolutely LOVE the schedule. A lot of people hear that we work 24 hour shifts and cringe. But I love the schedule because it leaves me the time to still work on my businesses or simply spend time with family.

What is your favorite piece of equipment?
I am not sure that I have a favorite. We have a lot of really cool equipment. However, if I had to pick something, I guess that I would pick Tower 11. There is very little that creates the excitement you experience while driving that size of a truck to a fire. Also, once you're there, being able to operate most everything, such as the ladder and master stream, with a remote control is awesome!
All of that said, my relationship with Tower 11 is a LOVE-HATE relationship. If you want to hear the "hate" part of the story, come and ask me. :)

Hobbies and interests outside of the department?
Spending time with the family. My wife and grandsons love to ride on the back of my motorcycle. Going to events where my grandkids are involved. With 6 grandkids, it keeps you hopping.

Best piece of advice to anyone thinking of joining the fire department?
I know that when people search for a career, they want something meaningful and fulfilling, and this definitely can be. However, sometimes in their search, people tend to focus on salary and make that a high deciding factor. No matter where you're looking to build your career, you can't use the salary as your main deciding factor. Choose how you want to use the fire department, or any other career, to help make a difference in people's lives.

¿Cuál es la mejor parte de ser parte del Departamento de Bomberos de Liberal?
¡Me ENCANTA el horario! Muchas personas escuchan que trabajamos turnos de 24 horas y se preocupan. Pero a mí me encanta el horario porque me deja tiempo para seguir trabajando en mis negocios o simplemente pasar tiempo con mi familia.

¿Cuál es tu equipo favorito?
No estoy seguro de tener uno favorito. Tenemos mucho equipo realmente increíble. Sin embargo, si tuviera que elegir algo, supongo que escogería Tower 11. Hay muy pocas cosas que generen la emoción que sientes al conducir un camión de ese tamaño hacia un incendio. Además, una vez que llegas, ¡poder operar casi todo, como la escalera y el chorro maestro, con un control remoto es increíble!

¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos e intereses fuera del departamento?
Pasar tiempo con mi familia. A mi esposa y a mis nietos les encanta pasear en la parte trasera de mi motocicleta. También me gusta asistir a eventos en los que participan mis nietos. Con 6 nietos, ¡siempre hay algo que hacer!

¿Cuál es el mejor consejo que le darías a alguien que está pensando en unirse al departamento de bomberos?
Sé que cuando las personas buscan una carrera, quieren algo significativo y gratificante, y definitivamente esta profesión puede serlo. Sin embargo, a veces, durante esa búsqueda, las personas tienden a enfocarse en el salario y lo convierten en un factor decisivo importante. No importa dónde estés buscando desarrollar tu carrera, no puedes usar el salario como tu principal factor para tomar una decisión.Elige cómo quieres utilizar el departamento de bomberos, o cualquier otra carrera, para ayudar a marcar una diferencia en la vida de las personas.

This upcoming Labor Day weekend our crews will be a Walmart and El Rancho collecting money for Muscular Dystrophy Association. The money raised goes towards helping find a cure for these diseases.

Here are a few facts about muscular dystrophy:

1. MDA supports people living with more than 300 neuromuscular diseases — diseases that can progressively take away a person’s ability to walk, move, eat, breathe, and live independently.
2. These are real families in our communities. A diagnosis can completely change a family’s future in a single conversation with a doctor. Over 7,628 people are affected in the state of Kansas alone
Imagine being a parent and being told, “There is no cure.” Then imagine watching your child slowly lose abilities that most of us take for granted.
3. MDA helps families from the moment of diagnosis and throughout their journey — providing care, resources, support, education, advocacy, and connection to specialized medical care.
4. MDA funds research because research creates hope. Treatments that exist today for some neuromuscular diseases were once just ideas in a laboratory.
5. We are fighting to change what a diagnosis means. The goal is a future where families hear “here’s how we can treat this” instead of “there’s nothing we can do.”

Este próximo fin de semana del Día del Trabajo, nuestros equipos estarán en Walmart y El Rancho recolectando donaciones para la Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). El dinero recaudado ayudará a apoyar la búsqueda de una cura para estas enfermedades.

Aquí hay algunos datos sobre la distrofia muscular:

What made you want to become a firefighter?
I asked Chief Kirk, what do you guys do in the Fire Department? He told me, we work as a paramilitary department, you will serve your community, and you'll train and learn how to fight fire. He then, told me some stories of when he first started in the Fire Service. Chief then asked me why? Do you want to join? We were hiring at the time. I initially told him no. I then thought about it for 2 weeks, and I called him and told him I wanted to apply. BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!!

What is the best part of being on the Liberal Fire Department?
You get to meet people, you serve your community, and help the ones in need. The trainings are amazing! You'll learn how to fight fires such as vehicles, structures, grass, and airplanes. You will also learn technical skills like high and low angle rescue on ropes, trench, confined space, and structural collapse.

What is your favorite piece of equipment?
I would have to say Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). While training with a SCBA we do search and rescue, forcible entry, breathing techniques, and we flow water. This all prepares us for getting comfortable when we have a fire that may require some or all of these skills.

Hobbies or interests outside the fire department?
I like to play my guitar. My brother and I play at Mass at St. Anthony Catholic Church. I enjoy being with my family. I also enjoy playing the PS5 with my son, right now he is into zombies. I also play online with my brother, gaming helps me decompress. Another hobby is walking and running with my wife.

Best piece of advice to anyone thinking of joining the fire department?
If you're thinking about joining LFD...DO IT! It's one of the best careers ever. You help others and help yourself. You become more discipline. It is not an easy job, you will always learn something new. One of the hardest things for me was getting my EMT. I didn't have any medical knowledge. I struggled with the test a few times, but I did not give up, and I was able to obtain my EMT certification.

Inicialmente le dije que no. Después lo pensé durante 2 semanas, lo llamé y le dije que quería solicitar el puesto. ¡¡LA MEJOR DECISIÓN QUE HE TOMADO EN MI VIDA!!

¿Cuál es la mejor parte de pertenecer al Departamento de Bomberos de Liberal?

Tienes la oportunidad de conocer personas, servir a tu comunidad y ayudar a quienes lo necesitan. ¡Los entrenamientos son increíbles! Aprenderás a combatir incendios de vehículos, estructuras, pastizales y aviones. También aprenderás habilidades técnicas como rescates de gran y baja altura utilizando cuerdas, rescates en zanjas y espacios confinados, y rescates en estructuras colapsadas.

¿Cuál es tu equipo favorito?

Tendría que decir el Equipo de Respiración Autónoma (SCBA). Durante el entrenamiento con el SCBA practicamos búsqueda y rescate, entrada forzada, técnicas de respiración y aplicación de agua. Todo esto nos prepara y nos ayuda a sentirnos cómodos cuando enfrentamos un incendio que puede requerir algunas o todas estas habilidades.

¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos o intereses fuera del departamento de bomberos?

Me gusta tocar la guitarra. Mi hermano y yo tocamos durante la misa en la Iglesia Católica de San Antonio. Disfruto pasar tiempo con mi familia. También me gusta jugar PS5 con mi hijo; en este momento le gustan mucho los juegos de zombis. También juego en línea con mi hermano; jugar videojuegos me ayuda a relajarme y despejar la mente. Otro de mis pasatiempos es caminar y correr con mi esposa.

¿Cuál es el mejor consejo que le darías a alguien que está pensando en unirse al departamento de bomberos?

Si estás pensando en unirte al LFD... ¡HAZLO! Es una de las mejores carreras que existen. Ayudas a los demás y también te ayudas a ti mismo. Te vuelves una persona más disciplinada. No es un trabajo fácil; siempre estarás aprendiendo algo nuevo.

Una de las cosas más difíciles para mí fue obtener mi certificación como EMT (Técnico en Emergencias Médicas). No tenía ningún conocimiento médico. Tuve dificultades con el examen varias veces, pero no me di por vencido y pude obtener mi certificación como EMT.

What made you become a firefighter?
I've always been drawn to serving others and being a part of a team that makes a difference when people are having their worst day. Firefighting challenges me mentally, physically, and emotionally, and I wanted a career that would push me to keep improving while helping my community.

What is the best part of being part of this department?
The best part is working together toward the same goal, helping each other grow, stay fit, and improve the skills needed to do the job safely and effectively. Plus, spending a third of the year with my shift makes it feel like I’m hanging out with friends, and every day brings something new.

Hobbies or interests?
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife and family, weight training, running, and video games to help decompress.

Favorite piece of equipment? SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus)
While the Halligan, Jaws, and pickaxe are some tools that come to mind, I think that the SCBA is one of the most important pieces of equipment we have. It gives us the ability to safely enter environments that would otherwise be inaccessible, allowing us to perform searches, make rescues, mitigate hazards materials and much more.

What's the best advice for anyone wanting to become a firefighter?
Never stop working on yourself, stay humble, ask questions- always, and take care of your physical and mental health. This job can demand a lot from you, and the better shape you're in, the more capable you'll be when someone is counting on you. Fitness isn't about looking a certain way, it's about being prepared to do the job safely, effectively, and for a long time.

¿Cuál es la mejor parte de formar parte de este departamento?

La mejor parte es trabajar juntos hacia el mismo objetivo, ayudarnos a crecer, mantenernos en buena condición física y mejorar las habilidades necesarias para hacer nuestro trabajo de manera segura y efectiva. Además, pasar un tercio del año con mi turno hace que se sienta como si estuviera pasando el tiempo con amigos, y cada día trae algo nuevo.

¿Cuáles son tus pasatiempos o intereses?

Fuera del trabajo, disfruto pasar tiempo con mi esposa y mi familia, entrenar con pesas, correr y jugar videojuegos para ayudarme a despejarme.

¿Cuál es tu equipo favorito?
SCBA (Equipo de Respiración Autónoma)

Aunque herramientas como el Halligan, las mandíbulas hidráulicas y el pico son algunas de las que vienen a la mente, creo que el SCBA es uno de los equipos más importantes que tenemos. Nos permite ingresar de manera segura a ambientes que de otra manera serían inaccesibles, permitiéndonos realizar búsquedas, rescates, controlar materiales peligrosos y mucho más.

¿Cuál es el mejor consejo para alguien que quiere convertirse en bombero?

Nunca dejes de trabajar en ti mismo, mantente humilde, haz preguntas —siempre— y cuida tu salud física y mental. Este trabajo puede exigirte mucho, y mientras mejor condición tengas, más preparado estarás cuando alguien dependa de ti. La condición física no se trata de verse de cierta manera; se trata de estar preparado para hacer el trabajo de manera segura, efectiva y durante mucho tiempo.

Residential Fire – 1126 Westhaven Dr.

At 3:59 am Monday, Liberal firefighters were dispatched to 1126 Westhaven Drive for a reported structure fire with multiple vehicles involved. First arriving emergency responders encountered a single-story residential home with heavy fire in the front porch, living room and attached garage. Two vehicles in the driveway were also burning.

Law enforcement officers and neighbors were able to successfully alert the occupants of the home and help them to escape without injury. However, the family’s dog remained trapped in the home. Firefighters were able to locate and remove the pet, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

As the fire was being controlled it was discovered that it had also spread into the attic space. Attempts to control the attic fire were initially unsuccessful until multiple roof openings were created to allow access to burning clothing and other items stored in the space. The fire was declared under control at 5:13 am.

The residence suffered extensive fire damage to the exterior, two interior rooms and the garage space. The remainder of the home suffered from smoke, heat and water damage. Both vehicles, a passenger car and SUV were a total loss. No damage to neighboring homes was reported at this time.

The fire is being investigated in conjunction with Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office investigators. All fire department units and personnel were clear from the scene at approximately 2:00 pm.

Liberal Fire responded with twenty-two personnel, two engines and two utility vehicles. Other agencies assisting at the scene were: Liberal Police Department, Seward County EMS, Seward County Sheriff’s Office, Liberal / Seward County Communications Center, Black Hills Energy and Southern Pioneer Electric. The American Red Cross responded to the scene and provided assistance to the family.

Incendio residencial – 1126 Westhaven Dr.

A las 3:59 a. m. del lunes, los bomberos de Liberal fueron enviados a 1126 Westhaven Drive debido a un reporte de incendio estructural con varios vehículos involucrados. Los primeros equipos de emergencia que llegaron encontraron una vivienda residencial de un solo piso con un incendio intenso en el porche delantero, la sala de estar y el garaje adjunto. Dos vehículos estacionados en la entrada también estaban en llamas.

Los agentes del orden y los vecinos lograron alertar a los ocupantes de la vivienda y ayudarlos a escapar sin lesiones. Sin embargo, el perro de la familia permaneció atrapado dentro de la casa. Los bomberos lograron localizar y sacar a la mascota, pero los esfuerzos de reanimación no tuvieron éxito.

Mientras se controlaba el incendio, se descubrió que también se había propagado al ático. Los primeros intentos para controlar el incendio en el ático no tuvieron éxito hasta que se realizaron varias aberturas en el techo para permitir el acceso a la ropa y otros artículos almacenados en el espacio que estaban ardiendo. El incendio fue declarado bajo control a las 5:13 a. m.

La vivienda sufrió daños extensos por el fuego en el exterior, dos habitaciones interiores y el área del garaje. El resto de la vivienda sufrió daños por humo, calor y agua. Ambos vehículos, un automóvil de pasajeros y una SUV, fueron declarados pérdida total. Hasta el momento, no se han reportado daños en las viviendas vecinas.

El incendio está siendo investigado en conjunto con investigadores de la Oficina del Jefe de Bomberos del Estado de Kansas (Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office). I have always been one to help people, the best way I could figure out how to do that was either the fire department or the military.

What is the best part of being on the Liberal Fire Department?
The people on this department have made this place feel like home. Coming from outside the area they have welcomed me in and helped make me feel comfortable.

What is your favorite piece of equipment?
I like the medical bag because with the equipment inside that bag you are able to take care of injuries from minor scrapes to larger scale medical issues.

Hobbies or interests outside the fire department?
I enjoy hunting, fishing, kayaking, leather working, and gaming when I am not at the department.

Best piece of advice for anyone thinking of joining the fire department?
If you are not sure if firefighting is something for you, I would suggest joining a fire department that offers volunteering. If you volunteer and find you enjoy that, then I would suggest finding a fulltime fire department that is hiring.

Cuando no estoy en el departamento, disfruto cazar, pescar, andar en kayak, trabajar el cuero y jugar videojuegos.

¿Cuál es el mejor consejo que le darías a alguien que está pensando en unirse al departamento de bomberos?
Si no estás seguro de si ser bombero es algo para ti, te recomendaría unirte a un departamento de bomberos que ofrezca oportunidades de voluntariado. Si eres voluntario y descubres que disfrutas hacerlo, entonces te recomendaría buscar un departamento de bomberos de tiempo completo que esté contratando.
