From the Kentucky Drug Overdose Alert System:
🔴Drug Overdose Alert🔴
May 27, 2026, Fayette County
“Between May 21, 2026 and May 27, 2026, 33 nonfatal, and 1 fatal, suspected drug overdose emergency medical service (EMS) encounters were reported in Fayette County through ODMAP (Overdose Detection Mapping Application System), which represents an unusually high number of suspected nonfatal drug overdose encounters in this period. As a result, people who use drugs in or around this area should take caution to protect themselves.
ODMAP is used to monitor suspected drug overdose encounters in EMS data to identify possible clusters of drug overdoses in Kentucky. Drug overdose alerts are generated when a county shows an unusual increase in nonfatal drug overdose-related EMS encounters in a 24-hour period.”

🚨We have Naloxone available 🚨
Always keep Naloxone or Narcan on hand and administer if you suspect a drug overdose. Fentanyl has been found in all types of unregulated drugs, so naloxone may help regardless of the drug taken.

On Friday, May 22, we proudly celebrated the 2026 First 5 Lex Book Madness champion and all of the teams involved!

The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department was proud to represent our winning pick — Danny the Diabetic Dinosaur, written by our very own school nurse, Emily Welch, BSN, RN! 🦕
Emily wrote this book to help children better understand a new diabetes diagnosis. She noticed that kids are often left out of healthcare conversations, so she created a resource written specifically for them. 👩‍⚕️

Thank you to Emily and all of the 2026 Book Madness participants for making this year’s competition so much fun! 🎉

➡️CDC Healthy Swimming Reminder for Memorial Day Weekend

With Memorial Day weekend here and more families heading to pools and splash pads, remember: Diarrhea and swimming don’t mix! Help protect yourself and others from waterborne illness by following these important tips:

🔸Don’t swim (or let your kids swim) if you have diarrhea. One person with diarrhea can contaminate an entire pool and make others sick for up to 3 weeks.
🔸Never swallow pool or splash pad water. Swallowing even a tiny amount of water contaminated with diarrhea germs can make you sick for up to 3 weeks.
🔸Stay out of splash pads if sick with diarrhea. Water jets can rinse germs off the body, and chlorine doesn’t kill germs instantly.

A little caution goes a long way in preventing outbreaks. Have fun, stay healthy, and enjoy the long weekend! 💧🏊‍♂️
