In Rockbridge Baths.

Last weekend, my canvassers (on left) were in Rockbridge Baths when they stopped to talk to a couple, Jake and Morgan McCown (and to have a beer!). Jake is a lifelong Independent, and Morgan was active in Republican politics for many years. Both are longtime beef farmers, who welcomed putting up a FARMERS FOR BETH MACY sign in their yard.

“What changed your mind?” I asked Morgan McCown, a proud Marine, yesterday.

It was Ben Cline’s latest TV ad, the one where he claims to be saving folks money at the gas pumps. “Right now, we are just so tired of hearing ‘The economy is booming, things are fantastic, everything's great’ when diesel for our tractor is over six dollars a gallon. We are tired of being gaslit.” [Note: it was $6.54 when I drove through Rockbridge later in the day.]

Costs have risen so much that Jake, like many farmers today, also works off the farm—effectively working two full-time jobs. His family has roots in the county dating back to the Revolutionary War.

“I believe that if something is wrong you say it's wrong,” Morgan told me. “I don’t believe in a party anymore. I believe in loyalty to what's right. Right now, American farmers and veterans alike are struggling, and everybody's too afraid to work with the other side and say, ‘Hold up... lying to us and saying I'm saving you money at the pumps is not reality.

“I don't think I'll ever agree with any politician on everything, but I don’t care who is in office right now. I want everyone out. Let's start over. If you're in office and you’re not willing to call [a lie] out for what it is, and to pretend like Epstein isn't a thing anymore or talk to your constituents or to say ‘let’s hold up on these data centers’ I want you out.”

Hmmm.

It’s duck and cover time over at Ballroom Ben Cline’s HQ. He has avoided every opportunity to debate, and only grudgingly agreed to meet at a neutral “forum” at the Rotary Club. He even questioned my support for Rotarians, not realizing they funded a part of my college education. Well, I just learned that the forum has been (Ben?) cancelled for mysterious reasons, citing fears that it wouldn’t foster “goodwill and better friendships.” My guess it has something to do with the record price of diesel, gas, food, rising interest rates, ball-rooms , tariffs, data centers and Russian funded weddings. Ben and I are asking to be hired by our voters. He is the first guy I know who thinks he can both run for the hills and for office at the same time. Cluck cluck.

Ben Cline is doing the same thing. But unlike Rat, he never dares to say the quiet part out loud.

"I think I'll vote for whoever's not you." There are plenty of other reasons to vote for Beth Macy, but this is a good place to start.

If you were at the candidates' speeches in Buena Vista on Labor Day, you heard how rude and sarcastic Congressman Ben Cline was to the Democrats in the audience-- suggesting that anyone who lives outside of BV (as he does!) had no business being there.

If so, consider calling Cline's office (202-225-5431) and informing him that we are all his constituents and we deserve to be treated with respect.
