🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

We’ve had reports of a fake traffic court notice being sent out that looks like it’s from Virginia courts.
It claims you owe money for things like:

Failure to pay fines

Parking violations

Speeding

The notice says your case is ā€œdelinquentā€ and pushes you to pay immediately sometimes with a QR code.
This is NOT legitimate.
Courts do not send out notices demanding payment this way, and they will not ask you to pay fines through a QR code.
If you get something like this:

Don’t scan the code

Don’t send money

Don’t click any links

Instead, contact your local court or give us a call and we’ll help you verify it.

If you’ve already sent money or personal info, please reach out to us as soon as possible.
Stay safe and keep an eye out for each other.

šŸ“¢ Scam Alert & Community Safety Reminder

The Lexington Police Department would like to remind our community to remain vigilant and aware of scam phone calls targeting families and loved ones. Recently, LPD responded to a case involving a sophisticated scam in which a resident was contacted by someone posing as an attorney. The caller claimed a family member had been involved in a serious accident and demanded a large cash payment to prevent jail time.

After speaking with a family member, the victim realized the situation may not be legitimate and contacted law enforcement. Through quick coordination and teamwork between the Lexington Police Department and NYPD, the package containing the cash was intercepted before delivery and is being returned to the victim.

We are proud of the partnership and communication between agencies that helped protect our community and prevent further financial loss.

We want to thank the victim’s family, officers, and our law enforcement partners for their teamwork in helping prevent further loss.

Scammers use fear, urgency, and secrecy to pressure people into sending large amounts of cash through a shipping services.
We want to thank the victim’s family, officers, and our law enforcement partners for their teamwork in helping prevent further loss. If you notice any of these signs or have doubts don't hesitate to call our non emergency number at any time to speak to an officer. 540-463-9177

Community policing isn’t always about lights and sirens šŸš“
Sometimes it’s stopping in, checking on our local businesses, and sharing a good conversation.

Big thanks to the Domino's Pizza crew for the hospitality and for letting us try our hand at a little ā€œon-the-job training.ā€

(We’ll stick to law enforcement… but we can mop in a pinch.)
