I thought at first that this was too shady to be true. Unfortunately, Snopes says it is true. There are some court cases saying that it is too against the Constitution of the United States - even for this administration. So now we have no Sunday voting in Davidson County and maybe no mail-in ballots. I hope you are all healthy, fit, and have good transportation!
The trump administration just handed state election officials one of the ugliest ultimatums in modern American democracy: turn over your voter lists to the federal government or the Post Office simply will not deliver your constituents' mail-in ballots. Under a newly proposed USPS rule flowing from trump's March 2026 executive order, states must submit lists of mail voters to the Postal Service 60 days before federal elections, or risk having their ballots go undelivered. It is breathtaking in its audacity.
What makes this even more alarming is that election experts and officials see it for what it likely is: a backdoor data grab. The Justice Department has already sued 30 states to get their voter data, and courts have ruled against the administration in all eight cases decided so far. Twenty three Democratic led states and D.C. are now suing to stop the executive order entirely. And a former USPS Board of Governors vice chair put it plainly: if postage is paid, the Post Office should deliver the mail, full stop.
This is part of a broader, relentless campaign by trump to nationalize and restrict voting, particularly mail voting, which he has long and baselessly claimed is rife with fraud. The SAVE Act stalled in the Senate. Courts keep blocking him. And yet here we are, watching the administration weaponize the literal mail carrier to pressure states into compliance before the 2026 midterms. Whatever you want to call it, it is not a free and fair election system.
