The Lexington Police Department will never call and ask for your personal information. If you get that call — even if it looks like it's from us — hang up.

We've received reports today of a phone scam targeting Lexington residents. Here's how it works: your caller ID shows a real police department number, and the caller uses the name of an actual officer. They tell you you've been the victim of fraud and that they need your personal information to "investigate."

It's a scam. Scammers can fake — or "spoof" — caller ID to make any number appear on your phone.

If you get a call like this:

• Don't share any personal or financial information.
• Hang up.
• If you want to confirm whether a call was really from us, look up our non-emergency number yourself — 336-243-3302 — and call us directly. Don't call back the number that called you, and don't trust a number the caller gives you.

We're always glad to verify whether a call came from us. When in doubt, hang up and call.

We are very grateful for all of our street and road crews for their hard work today. With the expected extremely low temperatures tonight, you should anticipate very dangerous driving conditions tonight and in the morning due to refreezing. We urge you to continue planning on not driving unless absolutely necessary. If you do have to drive tonight or tomorrow, maintain low speeds and keep safe distances. Stay safe and stay warm everyone!
