With the school year beginning across Massachusetts, this is both an exciting and sometimes challenging time for children, youth and their families.

Last month, to support the transition, our CBHC and CSA programs teamed up with the Eliot Family Resource Center to help kids across our communities head back to school ready to learn. 🎒📚

We handed out tens of thousands of backpacks and school supplies in Lynn and Haverhill, joined the Danvers Back to School event alongside the Little Explorers Explorers Day Care Center, and connected with families at the Salem Back to School Fair with Salem Public Schools.

None of it happens without the collective impact of our dedicated partners.

And the support doesn't stop when the school bells ring: our Lynn pop-up food pantry continues on the first and third Thursdays of the month with The Salem Pantry, giving families ongoing access to groceries and essentials. Visit us at 95 Pleasant Street in Lynn from 2-4pm!

Today marks the start of National Recovery Month, and we're kicking it off with a shoutout to work we're proud of: our Peer Recovery Coaches.

Integrated across Eliot's mental and behavioral health programming, our Peer Recovery Coaches walk alongside participants as they figure out what recovery looks like for them. These are staff with their own lived experience of recovery, helping people build a plan of their own, in community, without stigma.

That's the same person-centered philosophy behind our Zero Overdose work: everyone's path looks different, and it's sustained through community. Whether it's substance use disorder treatment, psychiatric care, or counseling, our providers and our culture are committed to stigma-free care.

Today, August 31, is International Overdose Awareness Day. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the observance, with the theme "25 Years On. Still Needed."

At Eliot, our Zero Overdose Committee works across every program to prevent overdose deaths, through education, prevention access, and harm reduction. If you or someone you love is struggling, you are not alone, and help is available without judgment.

Today we're holding space for everyone who has lost someone to overdose, and for the staff and community members doing this work every day.

A lot of the youth we work with have never had a positive male role model in their life.

Rodney, Program Director at Carbone Hall, knows that feeling firsthand — and it's exactly why he shows up the way he does. He says it's the whole team's mission: love the work, do it for the kids, and wake up every day ready to make a difference.

"Every single kid that comes through here has trauma — even just being taken out of their home."

Rodney's been doing this work long enough to know that every kid's story is different, but the goal is the same: rebuild what trauma took away, so every kid gets a fair shot.

This is what ten years of Eliot and MSPCC working together looks like for one family.

Christopher moved through seven foster homes before he came to live with his mother, Jackie. Eliot became a steady presence in their lives, especially Family Partner Lori Coleman, who Jackie says she's called "so many times when I needed to talk through something."

When Lori learned Christopher wanted UMass Boston gear for the holidays, she reached out to MSPCC, whose donors happily put together a package for him. And when she learned that foster youth in programs like UMass Boston's Pathway don't qualify for the state's tuition waiver, MSPCC's policy team took that fight to the legislature.
This fall, Christopher begins that Pathway program.

Care and advocacy, working side by side, for one family and the families who come after them.

🌽 The pop-up pantry everyone's talking about — and it's here to stay through early fall! 🌽

Eliot Community Human Services has partnered with The Salem Pantry to bring free, fresh food straight to our Lynn CBHC at 95 Pleasant Street. We've already held 3 markets this summer, with fresh produce, frozen proteins, canned and dry goods, and (when available) bread, eggs, and milk — all free, no strings attached.

By the time the season wraps, we're projecting we'll have helped move about 15,300 lbs of food into the hands of families who need it. That's the power of community showing up for community.

We've got more markets planned through early fall — mark your calendar and bring a neighbor!

Ten years ago, MSPCC joined Eliot Community Human Services. Two organizations, two different strengths: Eliot's operational excellence at scale, and MSPCC's program innovation and policy advocacy for kids and families.

A decade later, Nancy Allen-Scannell, who serves as Eliot's VP of Public Affairs and MSPCC's Executive Director, reflects on what that integration has built. From behavioral health urgent care to expanded resource networks for kids and families, advocacy, policy, and program ex*****on at scale have made a real difference.

The partnership's value shows up year over year: care that follows kids and families from infancy through adulthood, closing gaps that used to open up between systems.
