When We Say It Takes a Community

A new Nebraska report has identified '89 domestic abuse-related victim deaths since July 2022.' Behind that number are people, families, children, friends, coworkers, and entire communities left to pick up the pieces.

This is why the work of Sheltering Hands matters. We are here to support survivors, provide safety planning and advocacy, help people navigate systems that can feel overwhelming, and make sure survivors know they do not have to face abuse alone. But our work doesn't stop with responding to crisis. We believe in prevention, education, awareness, and building a community where people recognize abuse, know how to respond, and understand that domestic violence is not a private issue.

If you see this report and wonder what you can do, start by learning. Talk about healthy relationships. Know the warning signs. Believe people when they reach out. Share local resources. And remember that sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply let someone know: "I believe you. I’m here. You’re not alone.”

That is how we change the numbers. That is how we save lives.

Nebraska’s Domestic Abuse Death Review Team has identified 89 domestic abuse-related victim deaths since July 21, 2022, including 30 deaths in 2025, according to a new annual report released Wednesday.

A kind word, a caring conversation, or reporting concerns can make a lasting difference in a child's life.

At Sheltering Hands, we believe every child deserves to grow up free from abuse and fear. Together, we can create a community where children are safe, supported, and surrounded by caring adults.
