Meet Dwayne. 💙
Since October 2025, Dwayne has been part of Lexington Rescue Mission’s Homeless Intervention Program after first connecting with our Street Outreach team.
Several years ago, Dwayne suffered a stroke that left him with a brain injury, changing nearly every part of his daily life. After his medical challenges created financial hardship he could not overcome, he spent the last year and a half experiencing homelessness and moving from couch to couch just trying to get by.
Tasks that many of us complete without a second thought, like arranging transportation, filling out paperwork, or navigating appointments, became overwhelming obstacles filled with anxiety and uncertainty.
When Dwayne was finally approved for housing, there was one final step standing in the way: obtaining an updated Social Security award letter in person. For most people, this may seem simple. For Dwayne, it felt impossible.
His case manager, Alicia, carefully wrote out step-by-step instructions for the trip, including where to go, what to ask for, and even how to get back home safely. Before he left, they prayed together for peace and a safe journey.
The next day, Dwayne returned holding the verification he needed along with news that his benefits had increased.
But the greatest victory was not the paperwork.
The greatest victory was seeing Dwayne believe in himself again.
With support, encouragement, and compassionate care from Lexington Rescue Mission, Dwayne took the final steps needed to move into housing in May 2026. His story is a reminder that transformation often begins with someone believing you are capable, even when life has made you feel otherwise.
