🌊☀️ SWIMSUIT COLOR SAFETY MATTERS ☀️🌊

As families head to pools, lakes, rivers, and beaches this summer, here’s a safety tip many people don’t think about:

👙 The color of a child’s swimsuit can make a big difference in how easily they can be seen in the water.

As shown in the graphic below, some colors quickly disappear underwater or blend into the surroundings, especially in lakes, ponds, and murky water. Bright colors such as:

🟠 Neon Orange
🟡 Neon Yellow
🟢 Neon Green
🩷 Bright Pink

are often much easier to spot than darker colors like:

⚫ Black
🔵 Dark Blue
🟣 Dark Purple
⚪ White

While no swimsuit color replaces proper supervision, choosing highly visible swimwear can provide an extra layer of safety when every second counts.

✅ Always maintain active adult supervision.
✅ Designate a “water watcher.”
✅ Use properly fitted life jackets when appropriate.
✅ Teach children basic water safety skills.
✅ Consider bright, high-visibility swimwear when shopping this season.

📊 WHY DO SOME COMMUNITIES SHOW MORE PATROL HOURS?

We appreciate the questions and feedback we receive when posting our monthly Dawson County Sheriff’s Office Newsletter. One question that comes up from time to time is why certain communities appear to have significantly more patrol hours than others.

Here’s a little insight:

Several communities within Dawson County do not have their own municipal police department. To ensure law enforcement coverage in those areas, Dawson County has contracts in place that require deputies to patrol those communities for a minimum number of hours each month.

Current contracted patrol hours include:

🚓 Overton – 125 hours per month
🚓 Farnam – 30 hours per month
🚓 Sumner – 30 hours per month
🚓 Eddyville – 15 hours per month

These hours are not assigned to specific days or times. Deputies simply work to meet (and often exceed) the required monthly patrol hours.

In many cases, the patrol hours reported in our newsletter will be higher than the contracted minimums. This can occur because of proactive law enforcement efforts, community engagement, traffic enforcement, investigations, or calls for service that take place after the required contract hours have already been met.

It’s also important to note that the Sheriff’s Office does not track patrol hours within jurisdictions that have their own full-time municipal law enforcement agencies.

💙 We encourage our citizens to continue asking questions. Transparency and communication are important to us, and we want to ensure the information we share is understood correctly and not misconstrued.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the dumping of gravel in four separate areas of rural Dawson County. This was NOT done by the Dawson County Roads Department. Although, this could be useful for the roadways, it does create a traffic hazard and the possibility of an accident if the gravel is not noticed by someone driving in these areas.
