Happy National Public Works Week!

This week, we join APWA in recognizing National Public Works Week, May 17–23, and celebrating this year’s theme: “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community.”

Public works professionals are the backbone of our communities. They maintain the roads we travel, support safe infrastructure, respond when challenges arise, and keep essential services moving every day. Some of their work is easy to see, and some happens behind the scenes, but all of it helps build stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

To Kentucky’s public works professionals: thank you for your dedication, service, and commitment to the people and places you serve.

Across Kentucky, local transportation crews are always finding smarter, safer, and more efficient ways to get the job done.

The 2026 Build a Better Mousetrap Competition is your chance to share those homegrown solutions and help spotlight the innovation happening in our local agencies.

Whether it’s a custom-built tool, a modified piece of equipment, a new process, or a creative fix that saves time, improves safety, or reduces costs, we want to hear about it.

Submissions may fall under categories such as Innovative Project, Bold Steps, Smart Transformation, Pioneer, and Putting Families First Innovation.

Selected entries may receive local recognition, T2 swag, and the opportunity to be shared at the national level through the FHWA LTAP network.

Submit your entry by June 5, 2026.

Show how Kentucky leads the way in transportation innovation.

The Federal Highway Administration invites you to register for the next webinar in the HSIP Webinar Series, titled Investment Strategies for Proven Safety Countermeasures, which is scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2026 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm ET.

PURPOSE

The Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) requires a data-driven, strategic approach to improving highway safety on all public roads. The HSIP includes three components: planning, implementation, and evaluation. Planning includes the development of programs to implement highway safety improvements, including the installation of proven safety countermeasures, on all public roads. During this webinar, FHWA will provide an overview of our *NEW* Proven Safety Countermeasures Funding Scenario Package. In addition, two State DOTs will share how they identify economically efficient investment packages for Proven Safety Countermeasures to maximize lives saved and serious injuries prevented.

TARGET AUDIENCE

State, regional, and local transportation agencies responsible for developing and implementing highway safety programs. Please be sure to share this invitation with others who may be interested in attending.
