County of Rockbridge and City of Lexington, Virginia Government have partnered this year on a holiday display at Natural Bridge State Park for the Festival of Trees! Local organizations and businesses are invited to decorate a tree to promote their services and provide educational displays. The County and City are happy to again collaborate in promotion of our recycling programs and to help better inform our citizens on the services we offer. Stop by the Visitor Center at the Park and check out our display! Vote on your favorite display by placing non-perishable food or school supplies under your favorite tree, all of which will be donated to local charities and schools!

We want to wish everyone Happy Holidays, and we look forward to continuing to partner on these initiatives in the new year!

Friday, November 17

As we close out this week of recognition for America Recycles Day, our final post will show where our recycling in Rockbridge County and Lexington City goes after collection! RDS (Recycling and Disposal Solutions), with two facilities in Roanoke, VA, serves as the recycling processor for both localities. RDS has two facilities in Roanoke - one for single-stream recycling and another for source separated materials. The video below gives you a look at the sort line at the single-stream facility and how our recycled materials are processed and prepared for reuse! For more information on RDS, visit their website at:

Thanks again to everyone who attended Recycle Rockbridge Day on Wednesday! County of Rockbridge and City of Lexington look forward to partnering on more initiatives like this to better serve and inform our citizens!

Wednesday, November 15 - Recycling Tip of the Day

Plastic bags are not accepted with other plastic recycling! This material causes problems for the sorting machinery used by the recycling processor. The best way to recycle plastic grocery/shopping bags is to return them to the stores! Please bring your plastic bags to our local Walmart, Food Lion, Kroger, or Lowes for proper recycling!

Happy ! Here is our third educational tidbit of the week - what's the dealio with plastic bags? They can't be recycled, but several grocery stores will take them back! Hope to see everyone at Recycle Rockbridge: Celebration of America Recycles Day this afternoon!

Tuesday, November 14

Recyclable material, if heavily contaminated, cannot be accepted by a recycling processor! The guidelines below will help you make a determination on whether or not your recyclables should be cleaned before disposal. It is important to remember that not every item can always be recycled, and materials heavily saturated with food waste or other contaminants should be thrown away. Every piece of contaminated recycling increases the overall contamination level of the entire load!

Also, please remember empty recyclable containers that once stored hazardous wastes (oil, chemicals, antifreeze, fuels, pesticides, etc.) must be triple rinsed before disposal according to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality regulations!
