The Lexington Firefighter Challenge Team continues to dominate the competition circuit.
At last weekend’s Southeast Challenge event, our team delivered an outstanding performance, earning 12 first-place finishes, 4 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. Those results helped secure the Regular Season Points Championship in:
• Men’s Relay• Men’s Showdown• Coed Showdown• Men’s Tandem
Individual accomplishments included:
🏆 FF Andrew Cook – 1st Place
🏆 FF Mike Jeschawitz – 2nd Place 🏆 FF Danny Gilman – 1st Place and Rookie of the Year honors
🏆 FF Nate Oakley - Lions Den
🏆 FF John Barnott – 4th Place (50+ Division)
🏆 Chelsey Gerardi – 1st Place Explorer Division

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the Flight 5191 tragedy.
The Lexington Fire Department honors the lives lost. We also want to recognize the first responders and community members who carried out their duty with courage and compassion on that difficult morning. Their sacrifice and service remain part of our history and our community’s shared memory.

Not every vehicle crash is straightforward. Cars can end up on their sides, overturned, down embankments, positions that make it hard to access patients.
This week, Lexington Fire Department crews have trained on vehicle extrication and patient removal techniques, practicing the skills needed to stabilize vehicles safely, access trapped occupants, and remove patients in complex situations. Training on realistic scenarios helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to adapt to the unique challenges they encounter on our roadways.
Training today translates directly to safer, more effective rescues when real emergencies occur.

A strong partnership between the Lexington Fire Department and the Kentucky Blood Center is helping bring lifesaving care directly to patients when every second counts.
Since launching our whole blood partnership in June 2025, Lexington Fire Department paramedics have administered whole blood 37 times to critically injured patients in the field, including Kentucky State Trooper Jude Remilien. Early blood transfusions play a vital role in treating severe blood loss and improving outcomes before a patient ever reaches the hospital.
Programs like this are only possible because of the generosity of volunteer blood donors. Every donation helps ensure that blood is available for trauma patients, surgeries, and medical emergencies throughout our community and Central Kentucky. We are grateful to the Kentucky Blood Center and the donors whose selfless contributions help save lives every day.

Between extreme heat and severe rainstorms, it’s been a busy couple of weeks as Lexington firefighters have responded to structure fires, hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrications, vehicles into buildings and garages, water rescues, and emergency medical calls across Lexington. Our firefighters answer the call 24/7/365

Never try to drive on flooded roads.
Never drive around "road closed" signs.
Don't walk through floodwaters or play in rising creeks.

You can’t see:
How deep the water is
If there are ditches or uncovered manholes
If there is trash or debris in muddy water

Stay safe & take a different route.

Today we remember and honor Assistant Chief Jim Branham, who died on this day in 2017. Asst. Chief Branham died after battling cancer that was linked to his service with the Fire Department. He was 63 years old.

Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) training keeps our firefighters prepared for emergencies involving aircraft.
Approximately 140 Lexington Fire Department personnel maintain ARFF certification through annual recertification training, including a required live-fire evolution. Engine 14 and Engine 23 are our designated ARFF companies.
Thank you to the Blue Grass Airport ARFF Training Center for hosting our annual live-burn training and helping ensure our members remain ready to respond when called upon.

Lexington’s Public Safety Operations Center will conduct scheduled phone maintenance on Monday, August 10. Maintenance will take place from approximately 5 a.m. until 7 a.m. During the maintenance period, administrative phone lines to the Public Safety Operations Center and Enhanced 9-1-1, including (859) 258-3600 and (859) 258-5600, will be temporarily unreachable. For emergency calls, 9-1-1 lines will remain fully operational. Text to 9-1-1 service will also remain available. Residents needing to reach the administrative phone lines should call 9-1-1-, and calls will be directed appropriately.
