Yesterday, Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council approved the city’s operating budget for Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27). The budget process begins formally in March of each year with the Mayor’s Proposed Budget. Council is responsible for reviewing the Mayor’s proposed budget and passing a balanced budget for the year ahead by June 30.

Here are some highlights from the FY27 budget, which goes into effect on July 1, 2026.

During today’s meeting, Council approved a moratorium on data centers and initiated a Zoning Ordinance Text Amendment (ZOTA) process to review the current (outdated) regulations on developments involving data centers. A HUGE thank you to Lexington’s 5th District - Councilmember Liz Sheehan for her meticulous work on this issue and for helping us continue the important collaborative work - so that we get it right for our neighbors.

Neighbors, I encourage you to stay engaged with me and follow the updates on this important issue. As always, contact me to schedule a meeting if you’d like to chat about it!

Moments ago, Council passed a moratorium on data center development and initiated the process to update our rules and regulations. Given the urgency and community interest behind this issue, we believe this moratorium will allow up to adopt standards that are appropriate for Lexington. See my statement below.
