Remarkable research ahead! ๐Ÿ‘‡
Arkansas cattle producers know that bovine respiratory disease can be devastating for herds and costs as much as $2 billion per year industry-wide.
In collaboration with Texas A&M researchers, our Division scientists are working to identify the causes of BVD which will, in turn, make for more targeted treatment and prevention. Their research could lead to the development of probiotic products that use the good bacteria as an intervention to cure or prevent BRD.
๐ŸŽ‰What's even more exciting is in the second phase of the research, the team wants to develop a self-test kit that uses a system similar to the now-familiar home test kits for COVID-19. After sampling, the swab is smeared on a prepared test paper that will indicate whether the animal is BRD positive or negative.
Being able to identify which animals are at higher or lower risk of infection means veterinarians can focus intervention on fewer animals, saving money and lowering the risk of developing antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
How's that for a Thursday science lesson?

The little things living in a calfโ€™s nose could be key to combating bovine respiratory disease, the single most costly illness affecting the beef industry.

Happy Fall, y'all! ๐Ÿ‚ Did you know..?

Fall is a great time for planting trees and shrubs.

Watering is still important, especially after a dry summer.

Be careful not to prune broadleaf evergreens too severely.

Pull a soil sample now to get the best results during growing season.

Keep a close eye on insects and diseases on all fall vegetable plants.

Freshly collected seed is best stored in a paper bag or envelope until thoroughly dried, and then placed in tightly sealed freezer bag or glass jar to store in the freezer.

When planting container plants this fall, remember to disturb or โ€œopen upโ€ the plantsโ€™ root ball. This encourages root development into existing soil which reduces the need for watering and ultimately offers a better chance of survival.
