LLELA Lewisville Lake

LLELA Lewisville Lake 2,600 acres of prairies & bottomland forests, with the Trinity River running through it all.

LLELA's mission is to preserve and restore the native habitat and biodiversity; provide environmental education; and facilitate and conduct environmental research Tucked into the folds of the soft rolling hills of north central Texas, situated beneath the Lewisville Dam, the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) occupies a unique ecological position in the landscape of North America.

It is here where the northwestern-most extent of the bottomland forests stretch fingers into the southern end of the tallgrass prairie of the Midwest; where the Elm Fork of the Trinity River winds its way out of the sandy uplands of the dry Cross Timbers into the deep, rich soils of the Blackland prairies; where agricultural lands intergrade with ranching and a rapidly growing urban expanse.

Hand 280!

Not every connection with nature happens out on the trail. This little skipper butterfly (what appears to be a Delaware Skipper) found its way into our classroom and needed a helping hand getting back outside where it belongs. Sometimes stewardship looks big, and sometimes it looks like quietly opening the door and giving wildlife a chance to continue on its way.

Small moments matter. Every hand that touches nature helps shape Lewisville’s future.

Today is a two-for-one celebration: National Prairie Day and National Trails Day!

This restored prairie was replanted with native species just last year and is already showcasing the beauty and biodiversity of North Texas prairies. Native grasses, wildflowers, and wildlife all play a role in bringing these landscapes back to life.

LLELA has 3 distinct ecosystems you can explore- including the Blackland Prairie we are shouting out today! Thanks to the interconnected trail system, you can hike nearly 10 miles without ever needing to drive to another trailhead.

Happy National Prairie Day and National Trails Day. We hope to see you out exploring!

Big news for nature in Lewisville!

The Lewisville City Council has approved a design contract for the future Nature Center at Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA).

This exciting milestone moves us one step closer to creating a destination where residents and visitors can connect with the natural beauty of North Texas through hands-on learning, interpretive exhibits, citizen science, nature-based play, and outdoor exploration.

The future facility will celebrate the unique ecosystems that make Lewisville special, including the Blackland Prairie, Cross Timbers Woodlands, and Trinity River Bottomlands.

Thank you to everyone who has shared ideas and participated in the community engagement process. We look forward to sharing updates as the project continues to take shape.

Texas Free Fishing Day is coming up on Saturday, June 6! 🎣

No fishing license is required for the day, making it the perfect chance to try fishing for the first time or dust off your gear and get back out on the water.

LLELA will be open as usual from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for anglers and outdoor adventurers alike. Before you head out, please remember that cast nets are not allowed within the nature preserve, and all state fishing regulations still apply (bag and size limits, bait use, etc.)

Pack your tackle box, bring plenty of water, and enjoy a day outside on the Elm Fork!

Today, we remember and honor the ones who gave their lives in service to our country.
Whether you spend the day hiking, fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying time together, we hope you’ll take a quiet moment of reflection.

From all of us at LLELA Nature Preserve, thank you to the fallen heroes and the families who carry their legacy forward. 🇺🇸

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Did you know that turtles has a species have been around for over 200 million years? That's before the T. Rex was around!. Some turtles can even sense Earth’s magnetic field to help them navigate, and many species have incredibly strong homing instincts.

That’s why if you help a turtle cross the road, it’s important to place it on the other side in the SAME direction it was already heading. Turning it around or relocating it somewhere “safer” can actually confuse and stress the turtle.

You can also help protect turtles by driving carefully near wetlands and natural areas, leaving wild turtles in the wild, keeping waterways clean, and rehome pet turtles rather than releasing them.

We're throwing it back to share the second hand photographed in our campaign, as it includes an Ornate Box Turtle cared for by volunteers here at LLELA. To learn more about the box turtle reintroduction program, you can read about it on our website at https://www.llela.org/research/wildlife-reintroductions/box-turtle-reintroduction

Here’s a little snapshot of what’s blooming around LLELA right now 🌼

Early summer color are everywhere. Coneflower, basket flower, blanket flower, horsemint, and pink ladies are all putting on a show across the preserve right now.

Wildflower season changes quickly, and new blooms pop up every week along the trails, prairies, and roadsides. If you’ve been meaning to visit, now is a beautiful time to get outside and see what you can spot around LLELA.

The "wilderness" isn't just a distant jungle. The wilderness is right here in our yards.

Endangered Species Day highlights why these animals and plants are vital to our ecosystems. When we lose a species, we lose a piece of the natural balance that keeps our environment healthy.

Small changes make a big difference. You can support local conservation by planting native Texas species like milkweed, reducing the use of pesticides in your yard, or spending a morning volunteering at a place like LLELA to help restore our rare Blackland Prairie ecosystem.

The animals pictured in the graphic were once prevalent and native to Denton county or migrated through regularly. Pictured are the mountain lion, three-toed box turtle, Texas horned lizard, whooping crane, golden-cheeked warbler, Topeka purple coneflower, monarch butterfly, and northern bobwhite.
