Update #1 – Mifflin County Water Authority – Do Not Consume Order

Mifflin County in conjunction with the Mifflin County Water Authority are currently planning to open a water distribution site this afternoon in the Lewistown area. This will provide limited quantities of drinking water for those affected by the Do Not Consume Order.

This site will be open each day and remain open as supplies last. It is expected that we will have these drinking water supplies available for the duration of the Do Not Consume Order.

The operating times and location will be announced once delivery of the water is finalized and the site is prepared. The announcement will be made via web, social media and local news releases.

An update from the Mifflin County Office of Public Safety regarding the traffic accident which resulted in a Tractor Trailer leaving the roadway and landing in the Laurel Run Reservoir.

Since approximately 10 AM, area First Responders, Mifflin County Water Authority employees, PennDOT, PA DEP and contracted Hazardous Materials responders have been on-site assessing the accident site, planning the removal of the truck and cargo and containing any possible fuel and fluid spills. The removal was completed at 10 PM Friday evening after coordination with PA DEP Dam Specialists, engineers and the Authority. The damaged truck and trailer will remain on-site over the weekend pending arrangements for removal and transportation of the debris.

There is no current threat of water supply contamination, but the PA DEP has required the Mifflin County Water Authority to discontinue sourcing water from the Laurel Run Reservoir and rely on water being supplied by the alternate well fields. The Authority will be relying on water from their well fields until the expedited water quality testing mandated by the PA DEP can be completed early next week.

The Mifflin County Water Authority is presently working to increase that capacity from their well fields which has been limited due to some recent storm/electrical damage Thursday evening.

All residents are encouraged to conserve as much water as possible while repairs are being made and until the Authority can return to normal operation once the water quality tests are completed.
