Press Release

The United States Postal Service recently announced that they are changing the procedure by which they postmark mail. Instead of postmarking it when you drop the mail at your local post office, they will not be postmarking it until it reaches a Regional Distribution facility. This could take up to 1-2 days or longer. This means that if you are planning to Vote by Mail and you drop your ballot in the mailbox on March 16th or 17th (the deadline) normally it would be postmarked immediately and would be counted. This is no longer the case. If you wait this long, and the ballot is postmarked AFTER March 17th, we legally cannot accept it and count it. The County Clerk’s office strongly recommends all Vote-By-Mail Ballots be placed in the mail to be returned to the County Clerk’s Office no later than March 10, 2026. This recommendation stems from the USPS’s decision to make this rule change. It is unfortunate timing due to the upcoming March 17th Illinois Primary Election.
Any ballots returning to our office after March 10th, 2026, be hand delivered to my office in Lewistown. Vote by Mail ballots for the March 17th Illinois Primary Election will be mailed out, on or shortly after, February 5th, 2026.
Early Voting begins Feb 5th, 2026 in Lewistown at the Fulton County Clerk’s Office in Room 105 at the Fulton County Courthouse located at 100 N. Main St. in Lewistown. Lastly, your local polling places will be open, as usual, on Election Day, March 17th from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact my office.
