Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps

Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps, North Central Idaho Each crew is comprised of a 5 person team of youth ages 16-18 and 1 crew leader.

The Clearwater Basin Youth Conservation Corps (CBYCC) is a partnership effort between the Clearwater Basin Collaborative, Clearwater Economic Development Association (CEDA), the USDA Forest Service, Idaho Department of Labor, USDI Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Firewise, the Nez Perce Tribe, and local counties and communities. This program was piloted in 2013 and has been growing every year to i

nclude new crews, new geographic areas, and new partners. For 2022, the program will employ 6 crews; 2 in Kamiah/Kooskia, 1 in Grangeville, 1 in Orofino, 1 in Pierce, and 1 in Potlatch. The mission of the CBYCC is to expose youth to natural resource career opportunities and facilitate the development of practical problem-solving skills while participants work alongside program and technical specialists on projects that restore aquatic and terrestrial habitats and promote healthy rural communities. The CBYCC is a paid youth program offering local youth an opportunity to experience the outdoors in a workplace setting while also providing a fun learning environment and exposure to traditional skills. Each crew will work on a variety of projects including those that focus on silviculture, wildlife and fisheries, facilities maintenance, recreation, fuels reduction, trail development, weed management, stream restoration, and protection of heritage and other high conservation value sites. The intent is that work projects provide a valuable experience for the crew, but also accomplish a productive task for the sponsoring partner.

That’s a wrap on the 2025 CBYCC season! 🌲☀️

Our crews closed out their summer with a few more days in the field, followed by a day in the classroom learning about diverse career pathways in natural resources—from state and federal agencies to nonprofit organizations.

For our final day, all six crews came together at Wi******er Lake State Park, joined by the Kelly Forks Residential YCC program, to swap stories from the season, take part in a friendly crosscut saw competition, and enjoy a delicious catered lunch from the Craigmont Lions Club. It was the perfect send-off to an incredible summer of conservation, teamwork, and growth.

A huge thank you to our outstanding project partners—US Forest Service, US Army Corps of Engineers, Idaho Firewise, Nez Perce Tribe, and National Park Service—for sponsoring crews this season. Your support makes it possible for these youth to gain hands-on experience, build skills, and connect with the landscapes and communities of North Central Idaho. We couldn’t do it without you! 🙌

🌲 CBYCC Weekly Recap🌲

With just one week left in the season, our crews are still going strong!

🔹 Aquatic Habitat Monitoring
Grangeville crew spent the week along French Mountain, Clear Creek, and Voodoo Creek, helping improve fish habitat by removing dredge dams and monitoring salmon, steelhead, and trout spawning potential.

🔹 Campground Cleanup & Restoration
The Kooskia 1 & 2 crews teamed up at Powell and El Dorado campgrounds with the USFS to sand, scrape, and paint dozens of picnic tables and benches, remove downed trees, and even get a behind-the-scenes tour of Hemlock Butte Lookout!

🔹 Fence Projects & Forest Service Support
The Palouse crew partnered with the Forest Service to install and remove barbed wire fencing at Vassar Meadows, assist with dam board construction at Laird Park, and help out at the ranger station.

🔹 Beaver Dam Analogs & Invasive W**d Removal
The Pierce crew teamed up with the Nez Perce Tribe to build 7 BDAs, 1 PALS structure, and remove 7 bags of invasive Mullein and Hound’s-tongue from the meadow. Long days, but rewarding results!

Huge thanks to all of our partners for helping make these experiences possible! 🙌

CBYCC crews powered through another week of learning, growth, and serious hands-on work! 💪🌲

From pruning white pine and constructing slash piles to trail brushing, barbed wire removal, and campground maintenance — every crew put in the effort across steep terrain and hot temps. Along the way, they soaked up lessons from USFS partners, spotted wildlife 🐻, and watched wildfire aircraft in action 🚁🔥 to top it all off.

Big thanks to our incredible partners at the U.S. Forest Service for guiding our crews and sharing your knowledge!
