Susquehanna Valley Villages

Susquehanna Valley Villages Member driven non-profit providing the support needed to maximize members’ safety, independence, and connection to the community while remaining at home.

Stay Home, Stay Connected. SVV is a new idea for the region but the concept is well-known throughout the United States and Europe. Currently, there are about 140 functioning Villages in the U.S., and 120 in development. (Pennsylvania now has ten open Villages and two in development.) The idea is simple: Most seniors want to remain in their own homes and communities for as long as possible. Village

s are member-driven non- profit organizations that provide the supports needed to maximize members’ safety, independence, and connection to the community. Inspired by successful models in place in many communities, the Susquehanna Valley Villages idea came about because of the vision and efforts of Farida Zaid, whose work with the Union Snyder Agency on Aging, Inc. and other non-profits is well-known. Her 40-year experience as founder and director of the Union Snyder Area Agency on Aging (AAA) and with organizations serving all generations gives her an acutely informed perspective on the strengths and limitations of existing senior services. Farida believes that the Village concept would be a welcome addition to our community. So, in consultation with a diligent, committed steering committee and a team of associates, she devised and conducted a survey of area residents, investigated successful programs in comparable rural areas, and developed a model adapted for our local area. Then, the team created an initial plan for implementation, which is currently in progress.

It can be difficult to not think of the Village as a physical place and to understand everything that it can do. Here are some examples of how the Village can enhance the lives of our neighbors as they age in place.
