This would have been an extra $240,000 for Marshall E911. Would have been a great help on the funding for our new building.

Governor Vetoes Increase in 911 Surcharge

For only the second time since he took office, Governor Bill Lee today used his veto power to veto Senate Joint Resolution 48 which would have increased the 911 surcharge on phone bills from $1.50 to $1.86. The joint resolution had passed the house by a vote of 75 ayes, 15 noes, 5 not voting and had passed the senate by a vote of 27 ayes and 6 noes.

Had the Governor signed the bill, it would have brought in an additional $274,000 a year to Bedford County E911.

The 911 surcharge funds emergency communications districts, operational expenses of the State Emergency Communications Board, and the Tennessee Relay Services/Telecommunications Devices Access Program (TRS/TDAP). The current $1.50 surcharge has been in effect since January 1, 2021. In his response to lawmakers, Governor Lee referred to the surcharge increase as a "tax increase on nearly all Tennesseans."
