American Legion Post 1711, Levittown, NY Patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization.

Nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

🇺🇸 V-J DAY — SEPTEMBER 2, 1945 🇺🇸

Today is the 81st anniversary, we pause to honor, remember, and celebrate the Greatest Generation and the historic day that marked the formal end of World War II.

On September 2, 1945, representatives of the Empire of Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, formally bringing World War II to an end.

After years of tremendous sacrifice, courage, and loss, America and our Allied nations could finally celebrate victory and begin the long-awaited journey toward peace.

On this V-J Day, we remember the brave men and women who served, those who endured unimaginable hardships as prisoners of war, those who supported the war effort at home, and especially those who never made it home.

Their courage helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today.
