Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department

Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department - Cabell County Station 600 The Ohio River Road VFD is an all volunteer department founded in 1966.

We operate out of one station, protecting an approximate 70 square mile area. We have an ISO rating of 5 for those within 6 road miles of the station, and 1,000 feet of a hydrant or substantial water source. Our first due district includes Huntington north of the city limits, Lesage, Greenbottom, and parts of Ona and Glenwood. In recent years, we received an average of 750 alarms per year ranging

from medical emergencies to structure fires. However, due to changes in dispatching procedures by our 911 center in 2018, that number decreased to 280. However, expanded automatic aid coverage has increased the number of alarms to 330 in 2025. We currently have 20 dedicated, hard working members and 5 civilian board of directors members led by Fire Chief David Ash. We operate 3 engines, 1 heavy rescue, 1 utility truck, 1 chief SUV, and 2 boats. Current apparatus: 2018 Sutphen engine, 2007 Sutphen engine, 1993 KME/International engine, 2010 Spartan/Summit heavy rescue, 2022 Ford F250, 2004 Dodge Durango, a Crownline boat for the Ohio River, and a small Jon boat for back-water areas. Our command staff and line officers consist of one chief, one deputy chief, one assistant chief, two captains, three lieutenants, and one safety officer. Our Board of Directors governs our business affairs/finances. It consists of the Department Treasurer, Department Secretary, five civilian members of the community, and an additional four firefighters and/or officers. The Chief is also an adviser to the Board. Our Department is a certified IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

It's time to renew again, folks. The Cabell County Fire Levy will be on the ballot this coming Tuesday, May 12. Our levy provides critical funding to all fire departments in Cabell County and the Tri-State Fire Academy. The fire service nation-wide has not been immune to price increases since inflation skyrocketed in 2021. The cost of replacing and servicing equipment has more than doubled in many cases.

We are asking for your support to continue our funding in order to provide fire and rescue services to our County with safe, dependable equipment and quality training.

Please vote YES to renew the Cabell County Fire Levy on May 12th.

Last night after crews returned from an automatic aid structure fire, members trained on setting up our tripod with multiple variations of rope systems for confined space rescues, using alternative and modified anchors. They ran simulated rescues to get familiar with the resultant forces when hauling systems and loads through tripods. Members also trained on high-angle systems, lowering and raising victims and rescuers through multiple rope systems. This training was the first of many planned with our new rope rescue equipment.
