To the Leonia Community,
Attached is an update regarding recent action taken by the Board of Education at the February 11, 2025 Board meeting. This communication is being broadcast on a wider network than our typical school communications due to the potential community impact of the actions taken on Tuesday evening by the Board. The update covers two matters; 1) acceptance of a three month leave of absence request for our superintendent, Dr. Gatens that started on 2/12/25; and 2) an update regarding our superintendent search. The recent leave of absence request comes as a result of a serious injury that Dr. Gatens sustained while on the job and is unrelated to the health conditions that triggered Dr. Gatens' retirement which is set to begin on 8/1/25.
Dr. Gatens' passion for education, working with children, embracing our community's culture and finding ways to bring it to new levels are just some of the amazing characteristics of Dr. Gatens that will be greatly missed. We are grateful for all of the positive changes that Dr. Gatens brought to our district and wish him the best with his recovery and long term health.
If you have any questions or comments about the recent actions or any other school related matters, contact information for all board members can be found in the link below.
