Catawba Valley Pottery of North Carolina

Catawba Valley Pottery of North Carolina CVPNC is a community of potters who employ 19th century methods into the making of their pottery. For nearly 150 years the pottery tradition flourished.

Although having their own shops and kilns, separated by miles, they are connected through a dedication of preserving this time honored tradition. The Catawba Valley pottery making tradition began with Daniel Seagle(1805-1867) inspiring many others to take up the trade. After WWII, many of the potters left the pottery shops and took "city" jobs to provide for their families. It seemed that the Cata

wba Valley tradition and methods would be lost forever. But there was one who persisted-- Burlon Craig of Vale, NC. He continued the 19th century methods of pottery making for many years as the last "old-time" potter and by doing so, kept the Catawba Valley tradition alive. Fortunately, in the late 1970's there was another potter who saw the value in keeping this tradition alive, Charles Lisk, and before long others begain building ground-hog kilns and employing the methods that Burlon Craig had kept alive for so long. Burlon passed the knowledge of traditional 19th century methods of pottery making to the next generation, just as it was passed to him many years before. It is our mission to continue, in the spirit of Burlon, to keep the Catawba Valley Pottery tradition alive and well for many generations to come. We invite you to meet the potters, explore the history, and become a part of this community as we carry the Catawba Valley pottery tradition through the 21st century.
