Republicans supported Senate Bill 266, which made it easier for Duke Energy to increase electric bills and pass their extra costs directly to customers. Now that families across North Carolina are seeing higher bills, lawmakers are promoting HB 1192 and calling it “accountability.”

Don’t be fooled.

Under HB 1192, customers would still be responsible for about 80% of any cost overruns. Duke Energy would still create its own cost forecasts. Although the bill weakens some parts of SB 266, the basic system that benefits the utility remains. The main difference is how it is described in the media during an election year.

When utility company lobbyists get more access to lawmakers than the families who pay the bills, the result is predictable: laws get written to help the companies, not the customers.

Republicans had an opportunity to fix a system that was working against
families. Instead, they made it worse and removed important protections.

Remember this when you vote in November: nothing will change until the system is redesigned to put customers first instead of being built around what’s best for Duke Energy.

The NC House recently overrode the Governor’s veto of HB87, and as a candidate for NC House, I want to talk about it.

Speaker of the House, and my opponent, Destin Hall and I agree on one critical point: when our children succeed, all of North Carolina succeeds. Where we differ is in our idea of how that success can be best achieved.

All voucher programs are funded with money that would otherwise be spent improving the public school system. Gov. Stein vetoed HB87 because it diverts billions of dollars in public tax revenue to private schools. When something is broken, you don’t throw it away. You fix it.

HB87 does the opposite. It does nothing to repair our struggling public school system; it simply shifts resources to an alternative that not everyone can access.

“Iris, what do you mean by that? It’s about choice, so anyone can choose what school is best for their kid.”

Let me explain:

Private schools have a legal right to be selective in who they admit. I support and will defend that right.

And also—

Consider Bob and Sue, who want to send Little Suzie to ABC Private School because it offers a better education, strong sports programs, music classes, and newer facilities. But Little Suzie is denied admission. The reason doesn’t matter, since ABC Private School, as a private institution, can choose who it admits. Bob and Sue live in a rural area, and the next private school is 45 minutes away. With their commutes, that simply isn’t an option. So Little Suzie remains in the local public school, which now has even fewer resources than before.

This example is hypothetical, but the reality is not. North Carolina’s per-pupil spending is already among the lowest in the nation. Taking more money from underfunded public schools while subsidizing tuition for families who could already afford private school is a bad policy choice. A few students benefit, while the majority—and our state—pay the price.

The road to the White House runs through North Carolina; we’re one of the most competitive, diverse, and politically important states in the country.

Our states’ voters reflect the country’s mix of regions, races and politics, and doing well here proves that a candidate can build a winning national coalition. Early primaries have often focused on states that don’t reflect today’s diverse Democratic coalition, but North Carolina does.

If Democrats want a lasting governing majority, we must compete and organize in the South. That future is already taking shape in North Carolina, as local Democrats have spent years building the organizing networks, grassroots energy and voter coalition to lead.

Trump’s reckless war with Iran has pushed average gas to $4.49 a gallon; in turn, it’s driving up already high prices for groceries, transportation, utilities and everyday goods.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that Trump and Republican policies have done serious harm to people’s finances and livelihoods. Two-thirds of the country think it’s headed the wrong way and 70% reject Trump’s handling of the economy.
