Caldwell Co- the highway patrol is investigating an early morning deadly crash involving a 20-year old female.

State troopers say a single vehicle ran off the road near the intersection of Calico Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. The driver was ejected and died at the scene. There were no signs of impairment. Prayers for her family.

The Mayor and Council would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Chief Sam Smith. Our community and county has suffered a great loss. His leadership and friendship will be missed by many.

Gamewell Fire Chief Sam Smith — servant, leader, firefighter, teacher, family man — spent 40 years in the fire service working in both paid and unpaid positions and teaching fire science while continuing to love his family and give back to his church and his community.

We lost a dear friend and lifelong public servant with the passing of Chief Sam Smith. Join us to bid him a final farewell.

Help us bid Chief Smith farewell on Tuesday afternoon by lining the procession route. The procession is expected to start around 3 p.m. and the route is listed below:
From Calvary Baptist turn left onto Blowing Rock Boulevard (Highway 321)
Turn left onto Main Street NW
Bear right onto Creekway Drive NW to Harper Avenue
Bear right onto Harper Avenue to Morganton Boulevard
Turn right onto Morganton Boulevard (US Highway 64) to Gamewell Fire Department
The procession will pause while Chief Smith aboard GFD Engine 51 turns into the parking lot to the rear of the station, where Chief Smith will enter Engine 51’s bay and briefly pause.
Turn right onto Morganton Boulevard to Rocky Road
Turn left on Rocky Road to Miller Hill Road
Turn left on Miller Hill to Crump Road
Turn right on Crump Road to Clark’s Chapel Road
Turn left on Clarks Chapel to Orchard Drive
Turn right onto Orchard Drive to Woodlawn Memorial Gardens
