Never Forget. 🚒🎗️

At Fire Station 3, we are honored to permanently display an actual piece of the World Trade Center steel. Following September 11, 2001, our department—along with many others nationwide—received these artifacts to serve as a lasting visual reminder of that fateful day.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we pause to honor the brave men, women, and first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice. For us, this steel is more than history. It is a daily reminder of our duty, our community, and exactly why we wear the uniform.

14 members of the Lenexa Fire Department joined 343 area first responders for the 16th annual Kansas City Memorial Stair Climb on Sunday, September 6. Clad in full gear weighing over 80 pounds, each member ascended 110 stories to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters and victims lost on 9/11. Their grueling climb ensures we uphold a sacred promise: Never Forget.

Kicking for a Cause: Supporting Those Who Serve

Members of the Lenexa Fire Department were proud to take part in the 2026 KICKIT First Responder & Healthcare Worker Fundraiser Kickball Tournament at Blue Valley Southwest. Lenexa Fire was represented by two teams on the field and several additional members who volunteered throughout the event.

The tournament brought together fire, EMS, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and other public-safety agencies from across the surrounding communities for a day of competition with a much greater purpose—supporting mental health awareness, resources, and access to care for first responders and healthcare workers.

It was a great opportunity to come together with neighboring agencies, strengthen relationships, and support the health and well-being of those who serve our communities every day.

On August 11, 2025, Lenexa firefighters on Engine 93 and Johnson County Med-Act Medic 1137 responded to a critical heart attack call.

Crews entered the home and found a patient on the floor. She was conscious and breathing, but in a life threatening situation.

Our team acted fast. They assessed the patient, prepared her for transport, and rushed her to the hospital. But they did not stop there. Before leaving, crews secured her home and made sure her next-door neighbor was caring for her beloved dog.

Today, we have the best update.

She has fully recovered! Even better, she recently reached out and came to visit us so she could reconnect with the very crew who saved her life. Stories like this remind us why we do this job every single day. We are so grateful for this happy ending!

Last week Prevention Captain James Nickell concluded his 22-year career with the Lenexa Fire Department. James served as a Firefighter, Engineer and Lieutenant throughout his career. We took a moment to thank him for service and hang his legacy plaque at Fire Station 3. Captain Nickell will be greatly missed by the membership of our department and the City of Lenexa. We all wish James the best of luck in his new endeavor with the City of Olathe Fire Department after he was selected to serve as their new Division Chief of Prevention/Deputy Fire Marshal.

Last week Lieutenant Sturdevant and Fire Medic DeGraffenreid deployed with the Kansas Forest Service to North Dakota to assist with wildland fire operations.
They will spend approximately two weeks supporting state and local resources as North Dakota continues to experience severe drought conditions and Red Flag Warnings, increasing the potential for wildland fire activity.
We are proud of our members for representing Lenexa Fire and answering the call to assist communities in need.
