Happy Labor Day, Region 7!

If you’re planning to enjoy the unofficial end of summer outdoors, here are some important tips:

Protect yourself from the sun
- Prevent overexposure by checking the UV Index to determine the safest times to be outside and the level of sun protection required.
- Learn more about the UV Index here: https://www.epa.gov/sunsafety/learn-about-uv-index.

Check your air quality
- Check the Air Quality Index to decide when it’s best to limit or avoid outdoor activities due to unsafe air conditions.
- For current air quality updates in your area, visit www.airnow.gov.

Check for local beach advisories
- Contact the state office managing your beach for any water quality alerts. If you plan to fish, review state reports about fish safety in nearby streams, rivers, or lakes before eating your catch.

Keep your family safe from pests
- Protect yourself from ticks and mosquitoes while outdoors by using EPA’s tool to find the right insect repellent for your Labor Day plans: https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents/find-repellent-right-you.

Last week, leadership from EPA’s Office of Land and Emergency Management, led an all-hands meeting with employees from our Superfund and Land divisions to discuss agency policies and upcoming projects. He also presented awards to several staff members during his visit.

Visits like these help ensure that Region 7’s work aligns with national priorities and provides staff with a chance to connect directly with agency leadership.

EPA Region 7 recently traveled to Ames, Iowa, to honor regional recipients of the 2026 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators (PIAEE) and the President's Environmental Youth Award (PEYA).

Dede Henderson, a teacher at South Hamilton Community Schools in Jewell, Iowa, received the PIAEE award for her outstanding leadership in the classroom. It’s time for growing season burns!

Controlled burns play a crucial role in preserving the prairie ecosystem. These fires help maintain the health of the land and reduce the likelihood of severe wildfires. However, like any fire, prescribed burns do create smoke.

For the past ten years, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and EPA Region 7 have recommended that landowners perform prescribed burns from late summer through early fall, known as growing season burns. Compared to spring burns, these burns have less of an adverse impact on air quality because take place outside the usual spring burn period.

You can monitor air quality and smoke from prescribed burns by using AirNow and the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.

Recently, EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Macy and Chief of Staff Julie Linck attended the 2026 Missouri Governor’s Ham Breakfast.

The event is an annual gathering of Missouri elected officials and state agriculture leaders.

It was a pleasure to connect with our partners across multiple levels of state and local government, as we work to promote cooperative federalism across the region.

There’s no greater satisfaction than witnessing a successful cleanup, but every EPA Brownfields revitalization starts with the first step – an environmental assessment.

Recently, Region 7 staff had the opportunity to see several brownfields that the city of Dubuque plans to assess using their recent selection for a Brownfields Assessment Grant.
