Drill Night at Leicester Fire!

Tonight, our newest recruits focused on the basics of ground ladder operations, while our firefighters worked through several techniques for victim removal and above-grade rescues.

Building strong fundamentals and sharpening the skills needed when seconds count.

It was an early start this morning for Leicester Fire companies, who responded to a motor vehicle crash on Huntoon Memorial Highway involving downed power lines and a brush fire.

Upon arrival, crews found live power lines across the roadway, transformer fluid on the pavement, and a pickup truck off the road in the woods. The vehicle’s sole occupant was safely out when firefighters arrived. Crews secured the area and managed the hazards until National Grid arrived and disconnected the power.

This incident is an important reminder: Never assume a downed power line is safe. The lines involved in this morning’s crash remained energized until the utility company shut them down. Stay well away, keep others back, and call 911.

The members of Leicester EMS, Town of Leicester Fire Department , and Leicester Police Department attended the September 11th Remembrance Ceremony led by the Leicester Middle School Symphonic Band. As first responders we reflect upon the tragedy that struck 25 years ago. We give thanks to those countless first responders who fought alongside each other to bring others to safety. And we mourn the loss of all who lost their lives that day.

We would like to thank the Leicester Middle School for honoring us today and showing your appreciation for our service.

Today was Fire Drill Day at Leicester Public Schools! 🚒🔥

Around the dinner table tonight, we encourage parents and caregivers to ask their children about the drill:

• Did they know the safest way out? 🚪
• Did their class have a designated meeting place? 📍
• Did any part of the experience make them feel nervous or scared? 💬

This is a great opportunity to continue the conversation at home. Does everyone know two ways out of each room? 🏠 Where is your family’s outdoor meeting place? Once you’re safely outside, remember to stay outside and call 911. 📞

A few minutes of conversation and practice today can make a big difference during an emergency.

🚒🔥 PUBLIC SAFETY DAY & FAMILY FOOD & FUN FESTIVAL! 🔥🚒

Today, the Leicester Fire Department had a great time participating in the Town’s Public Safety Day & Family Food & Fun Festival on the Common!

Our firefighters thoroughly enjoyed spending the day with our community, answering questions, talking fire safety, and giving tours of our apparatus. There was plenty of hands-on learning for all ages!

🏠 Families toured our Fire Safety House, where we talked about what to do if a fire occurs in your home and the importance of having and practicing a home escape plan.

🚒 Our future firefighters got to show off their skills on the flame house, grabbing the hose and knocking down every last “flame!”

🔥 We demonstrated our dollhouse fire behavior prop, giving spectators a firsthand look at how quickly heat and smoke travel through a residence—and just how much of a difference a closed bedroom door can make. Close Before You Doze!

🧯 Residents also got hands-on practice using fire extinguishers on a live-fire training prop while learning the PASS method — Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep—and why having an ABC fire extinguisher readily available in the home is important.

Throughout the day, firefighters handed out fire-safety information, answered questions, and signed residents up for Leicester’s Reflective Address Sign Program, helping make homes easier for emergency responders to locate when seconds count.

And once the demonstrations wrapped up, we decided it was time to showcase another one of our specialties… elite athletic competition. 😎

Unfortunately, once the Leicester Police Department caught a glimpse of the raw athletic talent coming from the fire department, they wisely retreated to the safety of their cruisers. 🚓😂 We understand. Not everyone is built for the wheelbarrow race. Maybe next year, LPD! 🚒🏆

A huge THANK YOU and kudos to everyone who helped organize and put on today’s events on the Common. It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make a community event like this happen, and we were proud to be a part of it.

We had a blast spending the day with our community—and we’re already planning for next year!
