A message from Armor Persons, School Board Chair and East Lee County Chamber Board Member
The East Zone remains the fastest-growing area in our district, and the need for additional school capacity is immediate.
Most schools in this region are already operating over capacity, placing continued strain on students, staff, and resources.
It is important to note that the East Zone is largely comprised of students from Lehigh Acres, a community that has experienced sustained population growth and continues to drive enrollment demand.
Districtwide, Lee County operates approximately 100 schools.
This year, we experienced an enrollment decline of 1,900 students, the first decrease in more than a decade.
While that number may seem significant, it averages to fewer than 20 students per school and does not reflect uniform impact across all regions.
The decline appears to be influenced by several factors:
โข Some families have opted for private education or homeschooling.
โข Others have relocated.
โข A portion of this shift may also be connected to broader immigration enforcement trends, particularly within certain communities.
Despite this temporary decline, the long-term outlook remains positive.
The state is projecting an increase of approximately 1,000 students next year.
It is reasonable to expect one additional year of relatively flat growth or modest fluctuation before returning to a more consistent upward trajectory.
๐ซ Looking ahead:
Given these trends, it would be shortsighted to scale back capacity planning efforts, especially in the East Zone.
Growth in Lehigh Acres and surrounding communities continues, and our responsibility is to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace.
Strategic investment today will prevent overcrowding tomorrow and help maintain the quality of education our families expect.
