The Dulles Greenway Eagle Cam is a partnership of Dulles Greenway and Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. This nest is home to Bald Eagles on the Dulles Greenway Wetlands located in Leesburg, VA. Please note, while we hope that all eagles hatched in this nest will grow up healthy and will successfully fledge each season, occurrences including predators, natural disasters, territorial disputes, and sibling rivalry are common and may be difficult to watch

A mature eagle stops by to check out the nestovers at 15:10:31. Apparently they weren't up to his/her standards. 😊 S/he flies off without barely a nibble at 15:12:52.

Memorial Day is often considered the unofficial beginning of summer. Parades take place, the grill is dusted off for the first time. Actually, it is more than that. It is a day to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U. S. military and a time for solemn remembrance of their sacrifices. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. This Memorial Day Weekend, may we all remember the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes and their families.

Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know that Bald eagles go through a gradual plumage change as they mature.
The number one question and point of discussion among Bald Eagle fans is how to accurately age a juvenile Bald Eagle. That is a super difficult question to answer because every single Bald Eagle matures differently. They are a photographer’s dream because they all look completely unique from one another. All is not lost, however. There are a few field marks you can look for to make an educated guess on age. One can look at the beak, eyes and body feathering. As a Bald Eagle matures their beak will start to transition from black to yellow/gold, their eyes will do the same going from dark brown/black to bright yellow and the white splotchy feathering will lesson on the bodies and concentrate to their heads and tails. The big take away from today's post is that aging Juvenile Bald Eagle's is not an exact science and it is very fun to have thoughtful discussions on what the age might be.

Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know? Have you ever been watching a Bald Eagle up in a tree enjoying its lunch and then, when it finishes, it starts rubbing it its beak on the branch? It can look quite strange to the novice eagle watcher, but what it is doing is akin to wiping its mouth with a napkin. It's called "feaking".
Since raptors don't have napkins (or hands to aptly handle them) they simply rub their beaks against nearby objects to help wipe away excess food bits and debris. It's exactly like when you wash your hands, there aren't any towels, and you resort to wiping off the water on your jeans.
Aside from cleaning off the beak, feaking also serves another important function - it helps them to maintain their constantly growing beaks, sort of like filing your fingernails. So, the next time you see an eagle or another bird doing this somewhat silly-looking behavior, just remember that they are keeping up their appearance.

Dulles Greenway Eagles: A Future Tenant? 5-12-2026
What a delight to have this beauty visit the nest not once but twice! It’s always a joy to see the younger eagles thriving and this one certainly appears to be doing just that. Such a conscientious and hardworking young eagle. Aerating the fluff, rearranging the sticks and testing the nest bowl! A future tenant indeed!

Guess who's back! Apparently, there's still leftovers to be eaten and nestorations to be done!
