Staff Pick ✨ The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordian

We can't think of a better way to jumpstart summer reading than to dive into a good book series.

Eliza here recommends The Lightning Thief. “Rick Riordian is truly an amazing author. His characters are so endearing, and Percy’s narration is hilarious!" She added, "I read the books for the first time in middle school, and they are still so near and dear to my heart."

If you’re a fan of Greek mythology retellings, teenage shenanigans, and fast-paced action/adventure, place a hold on the first installment of the Percy Jackson series through the library's catalog: https://catalog.library.loudoun.gov/?section=resource&resourceid=7150273

This week, prepare for interviews with an employment consultant, recount the aftermath of D-Day, and take a closer look at brutalist architecture.

Also, percussionist Tom Teasley shows us how drums can calm the mind through rhythmic entrainment.

Last year we planted a native plant garden on the Old Waterford Rd side of the library and by the end of the year were hosting at least 5 monarch caterpillars on our newly planted milkweed plants! This year we have even more milkweed plants and we’re excited to see what happens this summer. 🦋

On the other side of the library in our food and flower garden, our dill plants hosted several black swallowtail butterfly caterpillars. We were lucky enough to be able to watch these transform into lovely, big fat caterpillars. They were last seen trekking across the parking lot, presumably to find a good spot to make a chrysalis, pupate and transform into beautiful butterflies. We’re planning on planting more dill this year and hoping to host even more caterpillars! 🐛
