Today we are highlighting one of our recurring Makerspace programs: Common Threads!

This week, we had our lovely host Nicola bring the community together for our monthly Common Threads program. This event occurs on the first Tuesday of each month from 7 - 8:30 PM.

The program encourages fiber artists of all skill levels to come together and work on knitting, crochet, needlework, or fiber art projects for a discussion about crafting. Thank you to those who joined us and to Nicola for running such a great program! 🧶

In 1949, France sent 49 railway cars to the U.S. as a gesture of friendship in the aftermath of World War II. One of those boxcars is right here in Virginia, and courtesy of The Questers organization, we now have a four-panel display at Rust Library that tells its story. Stop by and explore the exhibit!

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and we're releasing three new designs to celebrate! These cards reflect Loudoun's natural beauty, represent our love for reading, and call back to our traditional tree logo and vibrant orange. We also have a fourth design in collaboration with Laufey Book Club!

Don't have a card yet? Stop by any LCPL branch — it's free and only takes a few minutes. Already a member? Ask about updating to a new design.

Pirates, gators, and bears—oh my! Our storytellers want to share the following storytime themes with you:

Week of 8/31: Books
Week of 9/7: Bears
Week of 9/14: Pirates
Week of 9/21: Numbers
Week of 9/28: Alligators & Crocodiles

We are especially excited to highlight numbers this month, as September 25 is Math Storytelling Day. Similar to early literacy skills, early numeracy skills build a foundation for future math learning. Both skill sets often overlap during storytime, like when we practice counting during flannel time.

You don’t need your own flannel board, however, to practice these concepts at home. Try gathering five pieces of fruit and practice counting each piece of fruit with your fingers. Introduce mathematical vocabulary like “less” or “more” by removing or adding fruit and count how many are left.

You can also introduce shapes. For example, “A strawberry has three points like a triangle. Let’s count the points.” Another conversation starter could be, “What is bigger: the blueberry or the apple? Let’s put the fruit in order of smallest to largest.” The possibilities are endless! For more early literacy tips, visit us at library.loudoun.gov/EarlyLiteracy

This week, experience the Appalachian Trail through the written histories of its hikers, delve into metaphysics in photography, and start learning the basics of Japanese.

Also, a local historian shares photos and stories from Loudoun's historic buildings, dating all the way back to the 1700s.
