Support Loudoun Firefighters as they Fill-the-Boot for Muscular Dystrophy

This upcoming Labor Day weekend, members of the Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System (LC-CFRS) and the Loudoun Career Fire Fighters Association - IAFF Local 3756 will join the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to collect donations for the 2026 “Fill-the-Boot” campaign.

Firefighters will be collecting donations between Friday, September 4 – Monday, September 7, 2026, to support the MDA’s mission and give the Loudoun community the opportunity to make a difference. The Fill-the-Boot campaign is the result of a partnership between the MDA and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). For over sixty years, the IAFF has pledged to assist the MDA in any way possible until a cure was found to treat this debilitating disease.

All funds raised by Loudoun County firefighters assist local families affected by one of the forty-three neuromuscular diseases. These donations provide families with a network of specialized clinics, financial aid for assistive equipment, support groups, informative publications, and accessible summer camps for kids.

At the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad, our dedicated volunteer EMTs, paramedics, and first responders see firsthand the incredible strength of patients and families facing the unimaginable weight of a cancer diagnosis.
Behind every statistic is a brave child, a courageous community member, and a family fighting for hope, healing, and a cure.
This month, we stand in solidarity with all those battling blood cancers, pediatric cancers, and the families who love and support them every step of the way. We honor the young fighters, remember those we've lost, and celebrate the resilience of survivors right here in Loudoun County and beyond.

September is Child Safety Month, and the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad is dedicated to keeping our community's youngest residents safe.
September is Child Safety Month, and your local volunteer first responders want to share a few quick reminders to help keep kids safe at home, on the road, and at play:
Car Seat Safety: Ensure your child's car seat is properly installed and appropriate for their age, height, and weight. Many local fire and rescue stations offer car seat checks! Did you know that the Purcellville Police Department offers monthly car seat safety checks by appointment on select Fridays (March–Nov) and by appointment from Dec–Feb at 125 Hirst Rd? Reach out to them for more information.
Home Proofing: Secure heavy furniture and TVs to walls, keep medications and cleaning supplies locked up high, and ensure safety gates are installed on stairs.
Water & Outdoor Play: Always actively supervise children near water, and make sure they wear properly fitted helmets while biking or scootering.
Emergency Preparedness: Teach children how and when to call 911, and make sure your home has working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with fresh batteries.

🚨 WACKY WEDNESDAY: Human Body Edition! 🚨Happy Wednesday, Loudoun County!
At the Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad, our EMTs and Paramedics spend thousands of hours studying human anatomy to protect you during emergencies. But even we have to admit, the human body can be downright weird! Here are three wacky medical facts to get you through the middle of your week:
👀 Your Eyes Run on Air: The cornea—the clear, outer layer of your eye—is the only part of the human body that has absolutely no blood supply. Instead of getting oxygen from blood vessels, it absorbs it directly from the air!
🧪 You're a Walking Science Lab: The average human body contains enough carbon to make 900 pencils, enough fat to create seven bars of soap, and enough water to fill a 50-liter barrel!
🦴 A Heavy-Headed Fact: You might think your skull is just one big solid piece of bone, but it is actually made up of 29 different bones joined together.
🦴 Bone rings: Similar to tree rings, the interior of your bones contains tiny microscopic tubes called osteons that change and increase in size as you age.
🤏 Self-tickling block: Your cerebellum predicts your own movements, making it physically impossible to tickle yourself.

Ever wonder why our Loudoun County Volunteer Rescue Squad ambulances sometimes take up more than one parking space when you see us out in the community? 🗺️🤔🚑It might look like a tight squeeze (or a bit of an inconvenience), but there are critical safety and operational reasons behind it! 👇
⏱️ Immediate Access: Our crews must be able to get back into the driver's or patient compartment instantly when a 911 call drops. Extra clearance ensures doors can swing wide open without being blocked by neighboring vehicles.
🎒 Loading Gear: Paramedics and EMTs frequently need rapid access to side and rear equipment compartments to pull heavy life-saving gear, stretchers, or medical kits under intense pressure.
📐 Turning Angles & Blind Spots: Ambulances have massive blind spots and wide turning radiuses. Deliberate parking keeps our volunteers safe and allows for a fast, unobstructed exit into traffic when seconds count. 🕒

Please join us as we remember Captain Dannie Wilson who passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Captain Wilson served as the Captain and Station Commander at Fire Station 4 (Round Hill) for many years and proudly served the Combined Fire and Rescue System and Loudoun community for over 25 years.

We honor his service and will never forget his sacrifice and the sacrifice of his family.
