Severe Storms Possible Wednesday Night Into Thursday

A Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather is in place for much of Central Alabama, including Cherokee County, from late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning.

The main concerns will be damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, with a chance of a brief, isolated tornado, especially if storms remain organized as they move into our area.

Residents should make sure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight, identify a safe place to take shelter if warnings are issued, and continue to monitor updates as timing and impacts become clearer over the next day or two.

Follow for additional updates.

🚨 STATEWIDE FIRE ALERT REMAINS IN EFFECT 🚨

Fire danger across Alabama continues to rise, and conditions remain a serious concern for our communities.

🔥 Current Conditions:
• North Alabama: HIGH Fire Danger
• South Alabama: VERY HIGH Fire Danger

With ongoing drought conditions and low relative humidity, the risk of wildfires spreading quickly is significantly elevated.

🚫 Please Avoid Outdoor Burning
While this is not a burn ban, officials strongly urge residents to use extreme caution and avoid any unnecessary outdoor burning during this time.

📋 Important Reminder:
If you plan to burn more than ¼ acre, you are required to obtain a burn permit through the Alabama Forestry Commission’s dispatch center.

⚠️ Even small fires can get out of control quickly under current conditions. Let’s all do our part to protect our communities, first responders, and natural resources.

Stay safe, stay alert, and continue following The Leesburg Fire Department page for important updates impacting our area.
