On Wednesday June 24, SGT Ryan A. Foster was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in a ceremony at Ledyard Middle School with family, friends, colleagues and community leaders in attendance.

Lieutenant Foster is an 11-year veteran of the department. He is the past recipient of many honors and awards, including Officer of the Year in 2018.

In his new assignment, Lieutenant Foster will oversee daily operations in the Patrol Division, including all training and scheduling and management of special events.

As part of our ceremony this past week, Lieutenant Alan Muench received a well-earned promotion to the rank of Captain.

Captain Muench is a 25-year veteran of the department and the past recipient of many honors and awards. He is a natural leader and a mentor to many of our officers and supervisors.

In his new assignment, Captain Muench will serve as the department’s Executive Officer, overseeing many administrative and support functions.

LEDYARD MEMORIAL DAY PARADE (Rescheduled)—TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR SATURDAY JUNE 27, 2026

On Saturday June 27, 2026 starting at 1:00 PM, the rescheduled annual Memorial Day Parade will take place in Ledyard Center. This year’s theme is “250 Years of Service and Sacrifice”.

This event will cause a temporary closure of Route 117 in Ledyard Center at the start of the parade which will last for approximately 15-20 minutes. The parade will travel along Colonel Ledyard Highway and end at Ledyard High School. Colonel Ledyard Highway will also be closed for the duration of the parade, which is expected to last around 45 minutes.

Motorists should expect minor delays in the area and are encouraged to plan accordingly. Motorists and residents on Colonel Ledyard Highway, Wolf Ridge Gap, Fairway Drive, Colby Drive, Center Drive, Blonders Boulevard, and Gallup Hill Road should expect minor delays in the area and are asked to use caution for the safety of participants in the event.

Ledyard Police will be on scene conducting traffic management activities for the safety of all. We appreciate your assistance and cooperation to make this a safe and successful event.

A Message From Chief John Rich

I am writing today with mixed emotions as I announce my retirement after more than 38 years in Connecticut law enforcement, effective June 30, 2026. It’s been an amazing journey and I want to say a heartfelt thank you to all who have been part of it.

To the residents of Ledyard, Mayor Allyn, members of the Ledyard Town Council past and present, community organizations, town employees, first responders and everyone at Ledyard Public Schools, it has been the greatest honor of my professional career serving as Ledyard’s first Chief of Police for the past ten years. Thank you all for everything you do for this tremendous community.

I’m most proud of the men and women of the Ledyard Police Department, Ledyard Emergency Communications and Ledyard Animal Control and the team we’ve built over my tenure. You will always have a special place in my heart.

I’m extremely proud to announce that my immediate successor in this critical role is Chief Kenneth R. Creutz, who was sworn into office yesterday in an inspiring ceremony at Ledyard Middle School. I have tremendous confidence in Ken after working with him over the past ten years, and I know he will continue to lead the department with courage and integrity.

To my wonderful family and my brothers and sisters in law enforcement, thank you for everything. I could not have done it without you. Stay safe and be well.

Big congratulations to Officer Sean Cioci and his classmates on their graduation today from Session 389 of the Connecticut Police Academy.

Officer Cioci reports to duty tomorrow morning at LPD to begin his 400 hours of mandatory field training.

Update 8:03 PM: Route 117 is open to traffic and Eversource is on scene.

Route 12 is fully blocked in both directions with trees/wires down in the roadway.

We are working two major traffic issues in town.

Route 117 is closed between Spicer Hill and Thomas Road for a tree down with a car involved.

Route 12 is partially blocked with trees down at Anderson Drive.

Officers Taylor Krajewski and Kyra Gries stopped at the farmers’ market yesterday, and they met a new friend who told them she wants to be a police officer when she grows up.
