Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District

Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District Working with people who work the land since 1952 We are led by an elected board of five directors and several associate directors.

We work entirely on a voluntary, non-regulatory basis toward keeping water clean, conserving water, and keeping soil healthy. The mission of the Clinch Valley SWCD is to conserve and restore the natural resources of the district for current and future generations by making conservation technical, financial, and educational assistance available and meaningful to all residents and ensuring equitable

distribution of benefits and responsibilities. The Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (CVSWCD) is a unit of local government serving the citizens of Russell County, Virginia.

CVSWCD Staff are working towards bringing a beautiful native pollinator meadow to the heart of Lebanon. You can too in your back yard.

HENRICO—As flowers bloom and fresh produce fills farmstands across Virginia, June shines a spotlight on the pollinators that help make those things possible.

We’re looking forward to hosting a Clinch River clean up this summer thanks to the funding from Keep Virginia Beautiful!

The Clinch Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is our first Green Grant recipient in the Litter Prevention category. Located in Russell County in the Southwest, the Clinch Valley SWCD works to conserve and keep its local waterways clean. The group will use the $1,000 in funding to host an educational cleanup on the Clinch River this summer. We are eager to hear how this cleanup will protect a natural resource and educate others on how litter harms water quality, wildlife, and our shared environment.

At the beginning of April, Eagle Scout Jacob Colley, in partnership with Clinch Valley SWCD and Virginia Department of Forestry, brought together a group of volunteers from The Learning Center in Castlewood, CGI, Pioneer Counseling, and Scouts to plant 350 bareroot saplings on the property adjacent to the Russell County Government Building. A wide variety of native species were chosen, including redbuds, oaks, and pawpaws, and volunteers learned about the importance of removing invasive species. In 2025, over 75 invasive bradford pear trees were removed from this property, making way for the reestablishment of a native urban forest. Litter was also removed from the site, rounding out a successful conservation event.

The important habitat work being done on this property has been funded, in part, through the
Urban Community Fund through the Virginia Department of Forestry, and the Cumberland
Forest Community Fund.
