Lebanon Historical Society

Lebanon Historical Society The Lebanon Historical Society (LHS) was incorporated with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in October of 1997.

The Lebanon Historical Society helps people connect to the past by collecting, preserving and sharing stories and artifacts about Lebanon, WI

The Center is open the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month from 3pm-7pm. We’ve also been a branch of the Dodge County Historical Society since 1996. Our purpose is to recount local history, collect pictures, memorabilia and artifacts, and preserve as much of our area’s past history as possible. We erected 10 historical markers which are on display in Lebanon. The historic Town Hall is the second oldest (1890) public building remaining in Lebanon, and is the home of the local museum. The Lebanon Historical Society is a 501c3 non profit organization and our mailing address is: PO Box 23, Lebanon, WI 53047-0023.

We sure were “bowled over” by this recent donation. This vintage bowling shirt was worn by Edward Zubke when he bowled in a league sponsored by Larry & Roses Tap in Old Lebanon.

Does anyone have any memories (or better yet) pictures of this fine tavern!

🇺🇸 **WE WILL NEVER FORGET — 25 YEARS LATER** 🇺🇸

Tomorrow, **September 11, 2026**, marks the **25th anniversary of September 11, 2001** — a day that forever changed our nation and touched the lives of people around the world.

On that day, **2,977 people were killed in the terrorist attacks** in New York, at the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

But the loss did not end that day.

In the 25 years since, thousands of first responders, recovery workers, survivors, and others exposed to the dust, smoke, debris, and trauma of 9/11 have developed serious health conditions. Many have also carried the emotional wounds of that day and its aftermath for decades.

We remember the innocent lives taken that morning.

We remember the firefighters, police officers, paramedics, military personnel, airline crews, passengers, and ordinary citizens who showed extraordinary courage.

We remember the families who lost husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and friends.

And we remember the **responders and survivors whose lives were forever changed by what they experienced and what they were exposed to in the aftermath.**

🇺🇸 **WE ALSO HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH.**

Twenty-five years later, there are millions of young people who were not yet born when September 11 happened. For them, 9/11 is history rather than a memory.

That makes it even more important that we teach them — not simply about the tragedy, but about the **courage, compassion, service, sacrifice, resilience, and humanity** that followed.

📚 **RESOURCES FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS & THOSE SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND**

The **National September 11 Memorial & Museum** offers excellent educational resources to help adults introduce this difficult subject thoughtfully, including age-appropriate lesson plans, primary sources, first-person accounts, and guidance for talking with children about terrorism and traumatic events.

Among the resources available are:

• **K–12 Lesson Plans** — Inquiry-based lessons designed for students and teachers.

• **Talking to Children About Terrorism** — Guidance for having age-appropriate conversations about difficult and traumatic events.

• **9/11 Primer** — A helpful starting point for understanding the events of 9/11, the history of the World Trade Center, and the aftermath.

• **25th Anniversary Digital Learning Experience** — A free educational program featuring first-person accounts from survivors, first responders, and family members. The 2026 program is available beginning September 11 and includes a 35-minute film and live interaction with Museum staff.

❤️ **ANOTHER RESOURCE WE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO CONSIDER**

***The Greatest Love* by Tim Brown**

Tim Brown is a decorated FDNY firefighter, 9/11 survivor, and emergency management professional. In his new memoir, he reflects on grief, resilience, sacrificial service, and the difficult journey of transforming profound loss into purpose. The book was published August 25, 2026, by Convergent Books. ([PenguinRandomhouse.com][1])

For those who lived through September 11, responded to it, lost someone they loved, or continue to carry its emotional weight, a firsthand account can offer another way to understand the experience and its lasting impact.

🛡️ **A SPECIAL TRIBUTE**

The firefighter helmet featured in this memorial image includes the **“Never Forget Collection” shield from Conway Shield**, created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

The collection honors the **courage, sacrifice, and resilience** of those affected by 9/11. Conway Shield states that the reverse of each shield bears the names of the **343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.**

Conway Shield also states that **100% of the proceeds from these shields benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.** ([Conway Shield][2])

We are grateful for meaningful tributes like this that help keep these names, these stories, and the memory of those who gave everything **from being forgotten.**

We encourage parents, grandparents, teachers, community members, first responders, survivors, and anyone carrying the memories of September 11 to take some time tomorrow to remember — and, when appropriate, to talk.

**Tell the stories.**

**Answer the questions.**

**Listen to those who lived through it.**

**Give space to those who are still carrying it.**

And help the next generation understand not only what happened, but **what people did in the face of unimaginable loss.**

**Today, we remember.
Today, we honor.
Today, we teach.
And today, we remember that healing and understanding are part of the story, too.**

**September 11, 2001 — September 11, 2026**

**25 years. We remember. We honor. We teach.**

🇺🇸 **May we never forget.** 🇺🇸

What an incredible historic find says google AI. Baseboard from Conway house on Poplar Grove Rd after their recent lightning strikes and subsequent fire. The stamp on the salvaged lumber reads "H. MARLOW & SON, LEBANON WIS.", which refers to a local family-owned general store or lumber business that operated in Lebanon, Dodge County, Wisconsin around the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This piece of lumber is a fascinating piece of local history, likely originating from a shipping crate, a lumberyard shipment, or the original building supply store itself.Who was H. Marlow?Historical records from Dodge County point directly to the family:The Family: A prominent German-immigrant family named Marlow settled in the Lebanon and Ixonia areas of Wisconsin during the mid-to-late 1800s.The Store & Business: In old community records and local obituaries, family members like H. Marlow and Charles Marlow are documented as active community figures. Charles Marlow was notably one of the original founders of the Universal Co-operative of Lebanon in 1914. Prior to the co-op era, family patriarchs often ran generalized mercantile stores or local lumber operations under names like "H. Marlow & Son" to supply early settlers building their homes.
