Just your average, totally normal-looking caterpillar 🐛

This massive Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar was found on the move earlier this summer. These oversized leaf-eaters look scary, but are totally harmless! They use their large size and spiny horns to scare off predators... and Bennett Spring employees.

Hickory Horned Devils feed off of hickory, walnut, and persimmon trees, as well as some sumac species. They burrow underground, hibernate over the winter, and emerge next spring as the very large and beautiful Regal Moth.

A spooktacular success! 🎃🐟

Our Halloween event "Tricks, Treats, and Trout" brought in over 550 people who attended our spooky programs! Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteers who helped prepare, campers who passed out candy, and to all of our community partners from Lebanon and Buffalo who donated candy and helped us advertise the event 🍬

Come on down to Bennett Spring this weekend for our Halloween event, Tricks, Treats and Trout! 🐟

Tonight is our history walk 📖 outside the Park Store at 6:15pm and fly tying all day! Saturday is our EEK-ology Station 🕷 (4-5pm) at the Park Store, Trick or Treating at the splash pad 🍬 (6-7pm), Bats and Stars in the splash pad field 🦇🌠(7-9pm), and fly tying all day. Sunday is fly tying and craft day at the nature center from 10am-1pm.

PICKING UP PAWPAWS:

Challenge 5: Find a pawpaw tree with as many pawpaws on it as you can, and find s**t that contains pawpaw seeds.

Fun Fact: Lewis and Clark frequently ate pawpaw fruit on their 1804 expedition across the central and western United States.

UPDATE: The boat ramp and BSSP 1 Rd are now open.

The wooden bridge is now open for pedestrian fishing access via Campground 1, but the north side of the bridge and Bramwell access are still closed due to construction on the other side. The new vehicular bridge also remains closed at this time. Please do not cross construction barriers (flagging or fencing) until they have been removed by the contractors.
