What's Up in the Spring Sky?

Saturday, May 9
7-11 pm
Fred Bay Observatory
Hisey Park

Tour with us to discover all the constellations and galaxies visible during May and June.

The presentation by our amateur astronomers will be offered indoors before sunset. Afterward, if the weather and skies cooperate, we'll open the Fred Bay Observatory for stargazing.

Free and open to the public.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs as seating outside near the observatory is limited.

Members will set up personal telescopes and share night sky views.

There's a lot of talk on Facebook tonight about these lights in the sky tonight... Don't worry they aren't aliens, they are Starlink Satellites.

Right after deployment, they haven’t spread out yet, so they follow each other closely like cars on a highway. Over time, each satellite uses small onboard thrusters to gradually move into its own assigned orbit, spacing themselves evenly around Earth. Once that happens, the “train” effect disappears.

If you took pictures, post them in the comments!

We've partnered with Cincinnati astronomer Dean Regas to donate telescopes to the Franklin-Springboro Public Library and the Mason Public Library.

The easy-to-use telescopes are available free of charge for library patrons to check out, just like they borrow books, videos, and other materials.

Included with the telescopes are instructions, astronomy books, and a sky map to help people navigate the night sky.
