This is the final post about my background

Professionally, I am a retired Federal Civil Servant with 33 years of service, mostly at Fort Leavenworth. I started my career as a GS 2 clerk and retired as a GS 13 Chief of Material Maintenance. The last 14 years of my career were in management. By dealing with budgets, personnel issues, setting project priorities, writing contract proposals, and overseeing the daily operations of 4 shops I learned the art of finding efficiencies.

I am a member of the Leavenworth County Fair Association, Leavenworth County Beef Improvement Association, Leavenworth County Farm Bureau, Leavenworth County 4-H Foundation and Linwood Lions. I also donate my service as an auctioneer 12-14 times every year for various fundraising benefits.

As you can see by my entire life’s work, I have been and continue to be, actively involved providing service, leadership, guidance and problem solving for not only government operations, but also county organizations and events. And while doing all this, still had time to run kids to FFA, 4-H, ball games and whatever came up.

To say I love Leavenworth County is an understatement. I’m a life long resident with deep roots, serving and giving back to the community. Yes, this is a great county to live in. My entire adult life I have been discussing issues with friends and neighbors. I have an excellent working knowledge of what the constituents of the 5th District want and expect from their elected representatives. I will continue my daily interaction with those folks, to listen, to understand, and work to get results to our demanding issues.

This is third in a series of posts about my background.

I have served several terms on the Leavenworth County Extension Council. The council advises and assists with the county extension programs and has oversight of their budget and office operations. Three years I was elected by the council to the position of board chair. I also currently serve on the State Extension Advisory Committee sharing ideas and providing information on the state level with Kansas State University Extension.

We are blessed in Leavenworth County to have one of the largest county fairs in the state. I have served on the Board of Directors for the Leavenworth County Fair Association for over 35 years. The board meets year round to plan and organize the annual fair, as well as maintain the buildings and grounds. For many years I served as President, and I currently serve as board Secretary. During my tenure as President a tornado hit the fairgrounds causing damage to nearly every building. Some buildings were completely destroyed. This disaster occurred in May of 2000 approximately 90 prior to fair time. I oversaw the repair and reconstruction process.
and, with the exception of one building, all were repaired and the fair opened on time as scheduled.

I am also a graduate of Leadership Leavenworth Lansing. This leadership program is sponsored by the Leavenworth/Lansing Chamber of Commerce and provides invaluable insight into leadership roles and duties.

In my next post I will share my experience as a career Federal servant.

This is the second post in my series to give everyone some insight into my background and why I will be a great fit for 5th District County Commissioner.

4-H has always been a big part of our lives. My grandmother, mother, many aunts, uncles and cousins have been 4-H club leaders. My mother, myself, sisters, children and now grandchildren have been or are current 4-H members. I have served many roles including club leader, project leader, fair superintendent, judge, and a founding member of the Leavenworth County 4-H Foundation. I have continued to support and serve the foundation for 27 years.

4-H also lead me into production agriculture. I raised Gelbvieh cattle, swine and hay for many years. I’m still involved with agriculture, as an auctioneer, with a weekly hay sale throughout the winter.

In my next post I’ll share examples of my leadership abilities.

Although a lot of people have seen me around the county for years, some folks might like a little bit more detail about myself and background. This is the first post in a series to present to you why I am a great fit for 5th District County Commissioner.

I am proud to be a 4th generation Leavenworth County resident, as my great-great grandfather, Wendelin Hund, came to Kansas when it was still the Kansas Territory. You may have heard of Wendelin Vines Winery off of 167th St. My cousins are the owners and named it in his honor. My great grandfather, John M Hund, served in the 1901 Kansas Legislature sporting the same full mustache I bear. Interestingly, my wife, TerriLois, served in the 2011 Legislature.

My family has always primarily been farmers and as you will see in my next post, we have deep agricultural and rural roots.

Had a great time auctioning off items tonight for the Leavenworth County 4-H Foundation Annual Meeting. Always glad to help this organization. Also proud to say I was a founding member of the group.

I had the pleasure to attend a debate this evening regarding the Kansas Constitutional Amendment to elect Supreme Court Justices. It was a very well organized and informative debate. Thanks to the Leavenworth Lansing Chamber for sponsoring this event.
This will be on the primary ballot in August. I encourage everyone to study the issue, you can watch the debate on the chamber web site, and most importantly get out to vote. Recent elections have shown very low turnout. There are 3 candidates currently running for 1st District County Commissioner and 3 candidates running for 5th District County Commissioner. The primary election is very critical this year. Please get out and support the candidates! If you’re in the 5th District I would greatly appreciate your vote.
