Our mental health co-responder spoke with members of the community at the Riverfront Community Center this morning. She was at a booth with a staff member from the Guiding Lights Crisis Center, where she works closely with the staff to provide mental health resources.

We had officers at the Community Health Fair and Open House at Saint John’s Pavilion with the bearcat. These officers were there to answer questions, help with car seat installations, show off the bearcat and gear that our SWAT team has.

Officers will be at Saint John’s Pavilion located at 3550 South 4th Street until 2p.m. with the bearcat if you want to see it or try on a SWAT vest.

MEET THE PRESIDENT OF KLETC BASIC TRAINING CLASS 362

Class 362 has selected a Kansas native, U.S. Army veteran, and member of the Leavenworth Police Department to serve as its class president.

Raised in Meade and Claflin, Officer Derrick Deason developed an early appreciation for teamwork, discipline, and the outdoors. After graduating from Meade High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in locations across the country before eventually making Leavenworth home.

Although Officer Deason did not grow up in a law enforcement family, the example of relatives serving in the profession - and the continued guidance of a trusted mentor - helped reinforce a calling to public service.

“I enjoy serving people and being there for people, even on the worst days. I want to say thank you to the Leavenworth Police Department for giving me a chance to serve our community. Thank you to Class 362 for nominating me to be your president.”

Away from the academy, Officer Deason enjoys football, wrestling, and the outdoors - especially dove and deer seasons. In fact, he married on August 31, ensuring that the anniversary will always fall one day before the opening of dove season.

Congratulations to the president of KLETC Basic Training Class 362. We look forward to watching him lead classmates through the challenges and opportunities ahead.

It's finally time to go back to school! Tomorrow, our schools will be open with some students in attendance. Officer Plowman and our SRO, Officer Schneider, wanted to show you a simple way you can share the excitement of the first day while keeping your child safe.

It is amazing how we can share our kiddos' milestones with all our friends and family online, but it is important to remain mindful of what information is posted.

As a precaution, it's important to avoid posting information about your child's name, their age, the school they are attending, their teacher's name, the classroom number, their bus route, and any other information that could give away your child's location to strangers on the internet.

It is important to make sure we protect our children while sharing the excitement of the first day of school.
