Frio Canyon Fact 🏍️⛰️

If you’ve ever heard someone talk about riding the Three Twisted Sisters, they’re talking about three legendary Hill Country roads right here in our backyard.

Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 twist through the canyons and hills around Leakey and are famous across Texas for their steep climbs, sharp curves, and incredible views. Riders and drivers travel from all over the country to experience them. 🏍️🚗🌄

What many people don’t realize is that the name “Three Twisted Sisters” was actually trademarked by our own local spot, the Bent Rim Grill, right here in Leakey. 🍔🔥

Over the years Bent Rim has become a major gathering place along the route where motorcyclists, classic car clubs, and locals stop for food, music, cold drinks, and of course their well known Three Twisted Sisters apparel. 👕🏍️

You’ll hear riders say it all the time:
Bent Rim isn’t just a restaurant… it’s a destination and a checkpoint along the ride.

Have you ridden or driven the Sisters? Which Ranch Road is your favorite? 👇🏍️

Ever notice how the Frio River feels colder than most rivers in Texas? 🤔

You’re not imagining it.

The word “Frio” means “cold” in Spanish, and early explorers named it that for a reason. The river is fed by spring water coming from underground aquifers in the Edwards Plateau.

Underground water stays much cooler because it is protected from the sun and heat, usually holding a steady temperature around the mid-60s to low-70s degrees year round. 🌿💧
When that cool spring water flows into the Frio, it keeps the river refreshing even in the middle of a Texas summer. ☀️

The limestone in the canyon also helps filter the water naturally, which is why the Frio is known for being so clear and blue-green. 🏞️

So when you jump into the Frio and feel that cold shock… 🥶

That’s the canyon’s natural spring water doing its thing.

Frio Canyon Fact 🤠

Long before Leakey was founded, the Frio Canyon was home to Native American tribes who lived, hunted, and traveled along the river for thousands of years.

Tribes connected to this area include the Lipan Apache, Tonkawa, and Comanche, along with earlier peoples often referred to as the Coahuiltecan bands who lived across South Texas and the Edwards Plateau.

The Frio River provided everything they needed… fresh water, fish, game, and shelter along the limestone cliffs and rock overhangs that still line the canyon today. 🌿🌊

Even earlier hunter-gatherer peoples lived here 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, leaving behind stone tools and arrowheads that are still occasionally found along the Frio River.

So the next time you sit by the Frio…
just remember people have been gathering along this same river for thousands of years.

Have you ever found an arrowhead along the Frio? 👇

Ever hear old timers talk about how the Frio River used to be deeper?

They are not imagining it.

Decades ago, many stretches of the Frio held deeper pools year round. Several things have changed over time including long drought cycles, upstream water use, and natural changes to the riverbed as floods move rock and gravel around.

The Frio is still one of the clearest and most beautiful rivers in Texas, but locals who grew up here will tell you stories about swimming holes that were once a whole lot deeper.

Of course, after a good rain the Frio has a way of reminding everyone that she can still rise up and fill those holes again. 🌊

Do you remember a swimming hole that used to be deeper than it is today?

Drop it in the comments. 👇

Ever notice that Leakey, Texas is spelled like “leaky”… but everyone says LAY-key? 🤔

There is a good reason for that.

The town was named after John Leakey, an early Texas pioneer born in 1824 in Tennessee. In the 1850s, he and his wife Nancy made their way to the Frio Canyon and settled along the Frio River when this area was still very much frontier country
John Leakey helped shape the early community and even donated land for the town plaza, the school, the church, and the cemetery. Because the town carried his family name, it also kept the way his family pronounced it.

John Leakey lived here until 1900 and is buried in Leakey Floral Cemetery.

So the spelling stayed Leakey…
but the pronunciation became LAY-key.

And around here, if you say “leaky,” well… that’s a pretty quick way to let folks know you’re not from here. 😉

A little Hill Country history hiding in plain sight. 🌄
