Today, as we recognize the National Day of Prayer, it offers a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect, and express gratitude for the enduring strength and unity of our community.

This year of reflection is incredibly special as we celebrate the City of Leakesville’s 200th birthday alongside our nation’s 250th anniversary. Looking back on centuries of shared history reminds us of the resilient foundation that continues to hold us together.

As we look toward this weekend, we also celebrate the people who first nurture those roots: our mothers. Mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures are the true heart of our community. As Washington Irving famously wrote, "A mother is the truest friend we have." Their quiet strength and endless support help shape the future of our city every single day.

Let’s show our local moms some major appreciation this weekend while supporting our local businesses!
🛍️ Shop Local: Find the perfect gift right here in town to let her know how much she means to you.
☕ Treat Her: Take her out to eat, grab a relaxing afternoon coffee or tea, or toast to her with a celebratory cocktail!

To all the mothers who help our community thrive—thank you.

The City of Leakesville was incredibly honored to receive this sweet thank-you card and messages from students and classes at Leakesville Elementary School following the completion of the road improvements for Annex Road

Thank you to the students and teachers for the thoughtful cards and kind words. They truly mean a lot to all of us involved in making this project happen!

Happy National Pet Week, Leakesville! 🐾
As we enjoy this beautiful spring weather, we’re also seeing the arrival of something else in city: "Kitten Season." 🐱
We’ve been getting quite a few calls from folks across different neighborhoods and business districts about our wandering feline friends. While a new litter of kittens is always cute, the math can get a little overwhelming for our community!
Did you know that biologically, a single female cat can be responsible for up to 20 kittens in just 12 months? When multiple cats across city are breeding, those numbers can quickly climb into the hundreds. Lately, we've had reports of kitties seeking shelter in car engines, nesting under porches, and wandering through our public parks.
We want to keep our neighborhoods safe and healthy for everyone—both two-legged and four-legged. An unmanaged cat population can lead to property issues, health concerns, and tough times for the animals themselves.
The good news? We can easily handle this together as a community! 🤝 As we head toward Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month in June, here are a few sustainable ways we can all help out:
💙 Spay and Neuter: This is the most effective way to stop the cycle! If you need a little help, Mississippi Spay and Neuter (MS SPAN) offers low-cost options and vouchers.
💙 TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return): For feral or "community-owned" cats, TNR programs are fantastic. Once fixed, the cats stop breeding and noisy mating behaviors, but they stick around to provide natural pest control for the neighborhood! 🐁
Let's work together to make sure Leakesville remains a great place for all of us to live. 🏡

Power in Partnerships
This project—stretching from Hwy 57/63 to Old 57—is a perfect example of what happens when local government works together. By teaming up with the Greene County Board of Supervisors and the Greene County School District, we were able to tackle a major infrastructure need that no single entity could easily do alone. Thank you to our county partners for helping us get this done, and thank you to our citizens for your patience while we all work to keep our city moving forward!

The Bottom Line: What does a mile of smooth road actually cost? 🛣️💰
We believe in transparency when it comes to your tax dollars. Paving a single mile is a massive undertaking, and we want to put the numbers front and center for the recent Annex Road project:
• $315,000: The approximate total project cost (including recent fuel price adjustments).
• 50/50 Split: The City of Leakesville and the Greene County Board of Supervisors partnered to split the main roadway costs.
• $147,000 – $150,000: The City’s final investment to get this job done.
• $24,864: The cost of the dedicated 524-foot school drop-off lane, added specifically for student safety.
