Please reference the attached unclassified intelligence briefing. It is imperative that members of our community have an awareness of the very real threat that Domestic Violent Extremists pose to public safety. Awareness and open lines of communication between the community and law enforcement can help thwart this threat.

I (Hal Edwards) would like to make a statement about what has occurred in the Lake County schools today. Yesterday (6/15) school district staff were made aware of alleged threatening statements by a high school student. This student was immediately removed from the classroom and interviews were conducted by school district staff and Leadville Police Department officers. As a result of these interviews, it was determined that the best course of action was to suspend that student, pending the results of a threat assessment that will take place next week.

The results of the school district and police investigations did not result in enough probable cause to place the student under arrest. Much of the information was heresay and not supported by evidence and/or facts. Out of concern for the safety of students and staff, I have been in direct communication with Interim Sheriff Speckman and we have agreed to allocate all of our staffing resources to school district facilities for the entire school day (this is the last day of school). We have verified the whereabouts of the student in question and will continue to monitor and provide a very visible presence at all Lake County schools until the end of the school day.
The school district has disseminated information to all parents about this situation and will continue to provide updates as needed.
