If you spend any time on the Le Claire riverfront this summer, you'll see massive modern barges effortlessly cruising the river. But 150 years ago? That same trip was a dangerous, high-stakes gamble! ⛴️🌊

Before modern locks and dams, the 15-mile stretch of the Upper Rapids right outside our doors was a treacherous maze of shallow rocks. Steamboat captains had to hire elite, local "Rapids Pilots" just to survive the journey.

Swipe ➡️ to see how river travel has changed, and step inside the museum to discover the thrilling stories of the men who conquered the mighty Mississippi! ⚓
