Before every Council meeting I walk past a plaque for Kendall Bryant, a Layton firefighter who lost his life while in the scope of his duty. Today, I noticed a new plaque, with a new name and new face: Steve Winn. Steve tragically lost his life earlier this year while serving as a crossing guard for one of our elementary schools.

Today, we as a city honored Steve’s passing and commemorated his memory and service to all those kids he helped safely cross the street.

How fitting for Steve’s plaque to sit next to Kendall’s for as long as Layton City stands. Just as Kendall lost his life selflessly putting himself in danger to assist those in need, Steve takes his place right alongside, never to be forgotten.

Voted to certify the results from our most recent Primary Election for Mayor and Council. Congratulations to the candidates who qualified for the general election in November, where Layton voters will select a Mayor and two Councilmembers. And well wishes to the candidates who were eliminated. Thank you for your willingness to put yourself out there.

A few pieces of data:
- Total ballots cast in Layton: 9,190 (21% turnout)
- 9,109 ballots cast by mail
- 79 ballots cast in person
- 2 ballots cast provisionally
- 177 ballots not counted for untimeliness on account of new state law requiring by-mail ballot to be received by Election Day.

Few feelings like Back to School feelings. For kiddos and parents alike! Excitement, anticipation, and a bit of unease about the unknown. Here’s to the best of school-years from my family to yours.

“Where’s your name, Dad?”

“It’s not my year to run, sweetie.”

Truth be told, Election Day is much more enjoyable when you’re not on the ballot! And there’s something special about in-person voting and that “I Voted” sticker.

Polls close at 8PM. Be sure to add your voice to Layton’s future.

When your son and Councilwoman Bettina Smith Edmondson’s kiddo line up against each other under a beautiful but scorching afternoon sun! Here’s to hoping that this final stretch of summer is good for all of you.

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that a Layton crossing guard lost his life this morning in a terrible accident. My prayers are with the family during this difficult time—as well as those who were involved or witnessed the tragedy.

Our crossing guards keep our kiddos safe, and are there through rain, snow, sun, wind, or whatever the day has in store. They are an oft-forgotten but absolutely integral part of our community. Today all of Layton mourns the loss of one who was willing to help others.

Nothing like voting in person on Election Day! Four “I Voted” stickers, but only two eligible voters, I promise. 🇺🇸

I can still remember the faces of the crossing guards who helped me get to school. I remember how they used to let me give their STOP sign a high five. I remember how they’d give us treats on occasion. I remember how happy they were to receive a Valentine’s card or a Christmas candy. I felt they cared about me. That means a lot all the time, but particuluary when you are a child.

Thank you to the crossing guards who help keep our kiddos safe. You are there through rain, snow, sun, wind, or whatever the day has in store. You are an oft-forgotten but absolutely integral part of our community. Thank you!

Courtney Wayment once walked the halls of Mountain View Elementary, North Layton Junior High, and Northridge High. Then she became an All-American at BYU. Just a few months ago, she represented Team USA and qualified as an Olympic finalist in the steeplechase. Thank you for making us proud! And showing my three daughters and all the daughters in town just what a Layton girl can do!

Onto 2028, !
